Celebrating I Read Canadian Day

Happy I Read Canadian Day!

The second annual I Read Canadian Day is being celebrated today, Wednesday, February 17, 2021, across Canada, with kids, adults, parents, teachers, and creators, reading and sharing their favourite Canadian books. You can read more about this initiative here.

As a Picture book illustrator, I mostly read picture books (Children's, graphic novels, etc.), so this year I'm excited to read: Cone Cat, written by Sarah Howden, illustrated by Carmen Mock; Pretty Tricky, written by Etta Kaner, illustrated by Ashley Barron; and Maya’s Big Scene, written and illustrated by Isabelle Arsenault.

There are many reading lists shared over IRC Twitter and Instagram if you need suggestions. And check Bibliovideo, they share readings and interviews on their Youtube Channel.

This Wednesday, Feb 17th is #IReadCanadianDay! I'm so pleased to be an author ambassador for @bookeryfergus in my beautiful, historic hometown of Fergus, Ontario (@fergusontario). I practically lived in the bookstores and libraries of Fergus growing up, and I encourage you to take a walk through the lovely down town and visit The Bookery—they’ve got gorgeous books, magical tomes, and incredible things to discover. You can find them at bookery.ca . This photo was taken at the Fergus Library at the hometown launch for my debut novel #TRIPTYCH (yes, I replaced the background so the text was legible), and I think it’s wonderful that I was able to come full circle—from sitting in this library listening to #storytime as a child, to standing at the front of it, telling a tale I wrote myself! Today’s I Read Canadian spotlight is on @nacs2817 and her most recent novel, NO GIRLS ALLOWED. February 17th is @IReadCanadian Day! A day to appreciate and discover Canadian authors and illustrators by taking 15 minutes to read a Canadian book to kids (or any person, or pet, or even yourself)! It’s 1977, and 10-year-old Tina couldn’t be happier about her life. Not because she just moved to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, but because she’s finally old enough to make her dream come true: she can play on a real hockey team. But when she tries to join the league, she learns that girls aren’t allowed to play on the boys’ team—and there’s no team for girls.   Despite jeers from classmates and cruelty from some of the town’s adults, Tina is determined to play. She wants it more than anything. With the help of her family, Tina takes her fight to the Human Rights Commission. She’s allowed to play on a team while her case goes through court, but though she’s the best skater on the ice, even some of her teammates think she shouldn’t be there.
