Tommy Lowry Tjapaltjarri (c. 1935–1987), also known as Tommy Tichiwan Tjapaltjarri and Tommy No. 4, was one of the original shareholders of Papunya Tula Artists and an important Pintupi painter of the Western Desert Art movement. Charlie Ward Tjakamarra (c. 1940–2005) was a senior Pintupi artist whose paintings helped extend the Western Desert Art movement beyond its Papunya origins. Charlie Egalie Tjapaltjarri was one of the important early Papunya artists whose paintings helped establish the Western Desert Art movement during the early 1970s. A Warlpiri/Luritja artist born at Pikilyi (Vaughan Springs), he worked as a stockman before joining Papunya Tula Artists, where he was encouraged by pioneers including Kaapa Tjampitjinpa, Johnny Warangkula Tjupurrula and Billy Stockman Tjapaltjarri. Old Tutuma Tjapangati (also known as Old Tutama Tjapangati) (c. 1909–1987) was one of the senior Pintupi ceremonial leaders who helped establish the Papunya painting movement during its earliest years. Born at Wirrilinya, southwest of Lake Hopkins near the Western Australian border, he brought a lifetime of cultural knowledge to the first Papunya Boards. Although failing eyesight limited his artistic output, the small number of surviving paintings are historically important and among the rarest works by the founding generation of Papunya artists.
