The Changing Face of Brooklyn

Here are two views take nearly forty years apart: the Parachute Jump at Coney Island. Two images by Richard Koenig; taken late 1984 or early 1985—and in June of 2021.

1.18.22 Lunchtime drawing: I'm presenting today an oversized sketchbook with a live, on-site watercolor in Coney Island! While I painted on the boardwalk, the wind knocked over the easel, my water, and the watercolor block repeatedly, all while I'm dressed for what looks like an Antarctic trip, and propping up my phone on a bench to go on Instagram Live while doing so (it's online for you to watch.) One thing I love about painting outdoors is the unpredictability of it all (as opposed to indoors at a studio). We have the Atlantic Ocean, the beach, and Parachute Jump all the way over to the Wonder Wheel. This place is magic.

At 12,500 feet AGL (Above Ground Level) a lot can go wrong when she steps outside the plane. Yet she took the leap anyways.

Figure out what you want to do in life, cast away any fears and doubts, and GO FOR IT!!! You either take the risk or lose the chance.

SIDE NOTE: always pack a chute before making the jump.

Winter’s Day, Coney Island

In the first image above, we see the Parachute Jump. This amusement ride was originally built for the 1939 World’s Fair and moved to Coney Island in 1941. It has been protected as a New York City Designated Landmark; please go here for some more of its history. I believe many of the buildings one sees in the background are those of the New York City Housing Authority.

The second image was taken on the same day, looking ninety degrees camera left—that’s snow and ice on the beach.
