Hi there! I just wanted to ask about how you’d write about militia themed stories? The one I’m writing is a mix between magic and militia but I’m especially struggling with the militia part because I don’t exactly know how it works. It doesn’t really delve too deeply into militia just— enough to get the basic idea and that they’re inhumane, they kidnap children to turn them into weapons. All that stuff.
Militia can have a few different meanings, going from a part of the offical military, to a semi-legal group that has official power but uses it for illegal purposes, to an unofficial group of mercenaries used by people in power, to a paramilitary force that often works against the government and usually involves a small but heavily armed group with a specific religious or political ideology. From your ask I guess you mean a paramilitary group that does not work within the law, so I will talk about this kind of militia.
Paramilitary Forces/ Militia
a private army that does not pledge allegiance to a state
a group of like-minded people (often religious or political ideology that does not reflect the rest of the state)
heavily armed and sometimes trained like real military
often found in regions with a weak government
or a region that the central government can’t keep a strong hold over
usually land owners that live by their own rules on their own land
often with a clear hierarchy like an army, most of the time one leader or a small of leaders
they can either stay on their land until threatened or actively try to gain control over the region they live in and take on the government role
forms of paramilitary forces can be criminal cartels, cults, people rejecting the current government or religious or ethnic groups that face real persecution in their country
goals of a militia can be: to defend their way of life without government intervention, to fight actively against the current government, or to form a new sovereign state
So for your story I would give the militia a stronghold that the government has basically no control over. Then I would think about the structure of the militia and elect one leader or a small group of leaders that can decide and function at the time as the sovereign, the head of operations and military general. Think about the training the combatants get and if they have to use it regularly (against the government). Think about the ways they can keep doing what they are doing without someone stopping them.
I hope this was helpful and I wish you good luck with your story!
