The Tarand, or Parandrus, was originally documented in book 8 of Pliny the Elder’s Natural History which is estimated to have been written in 77 A.D. It was additionally written about by Aristotle, Aelian, and Francois Rabelais' book Pantagruel, written in 1552.

This creature is thought to have had camouflage as it was described as being able to conceal itself by changing its appearance to match its surroundings. Pliny wrote, “In Scythia there is a beast called Tarandus, which chaungeth likewise colour as the Chamæleon: and no other creature bearing haire doth the same.” In its natural state, it was said to have long fur “colored like a bear”, cloven hooves, the head of a stag, long branching antlers, and was the size of an ox.

The parandrus is an animal featured in some medieval bestiaries. It is said to be the size of an ox, with antlers, cloven hooves and a long, shaggy coat which can change colour in order for the animal to camouflage itself.

The parandrus is also known as the tarandros, which has lent itself to the scientific name of the reindeer, Rangifer tarandus.

took a lil' break to prep for artfight, so i'll post all the rest back-to-back to catch up! :]

this is Shruffalo, a Plant Kreebee! it is a medieval-era beast called a Parandrus, a hybrid creature observed in Ethiopia that no one really understood. was it an ox? a deer? a bear?? it was so hard to tell because it would camouflage with the trees around it. of course, it is now understood that it blends in well because its body is naturally made of greenery and bark, rather than possessing some sort of color-changing properties like originally speculated.

though it may appear grumpy, Shruffalo are docile and even welcome other forest creatures to perch on its horns or nest on its back. however, it is a great protector of the jungle and can prove to be a fearsome foe. its tail thorns are poisonous, and it can summon all sorts of plant-based attacks from vines to spore clouds, though its signature weapon is its large bark horns, which it can make grow temporarily before charging with them. it also helps its environment thrive, eating away rotted plants and shaking off seeds from its fur to take their place.

In Mythika: Yale are strange omnivorous chimerae creatures that combine the features of stags (body), antelopes (horns) and boars (tusks). They will attack humans out of self-defense and devour the corpses if they kill them, but they don’t really hunt humans, they are just aggressive and they think humans are after their magical horns. The most bizarre ability of the Yale are its twisting horns it can twist into any shape and direction it wants, there are many variants of Yale in Mythika, many different game-sprites with many different horn combinations to breathe life into the myth. Yale are hunted by a lot of predators such as Mngwa and Keythong, but they are just as much a victim as the victor in such battles. Their huge horns make for great weapons, mostly they are used to create flexible, bendable magic staffs, that cast faster than other staff weapons.

Parandrus (second picture) As the embodiment of wild nature, these aggressive chimerae are a force to be reckoned with. They may not be the strongest creatures but they are almost unstoppable when they go berserk, and they go berserk all the time as its in their magical nature, some scholars even think these creatures are spontaneously born from the soil where nature is at its wildest, its nature’s way of cooling down, putting all their wild energy into a single creature. Parandrus can also twist their horns like their lesser cousins the Yale, and they have magical fur which can blend into the environment like a chameleon.
