This is my daughter, Addison. She will be 11 this summer. When she was three years old she was diagnosed with moyamoya only after suffering two strokes. After diagnosis, she has gone on to have 4 more strokes, two indirect-bypass surgies on her brain, become paraplegic and non verbal due to the strokes, spent 6 months in the hospital for stablization and therapy, addition of a trach and gtube, spinal fusion, amplatz device to fix a whole in her heart, hospitalizations for countless bouts of pneumonia, hospitalizations for gastro dismotility, pt and ot visits, and more specialist appointments than i could ever begin to list. For most of this, i was a single mom with three other kids. We had to make adjustments to our house and vehicle to accommodate addi’s new disabilities. I have always had primary insurance, but without medical assistance (MN version of medicaid), I would never have been able to take care of addi let alone be able to afford to live and support my other children. It has been an uphill battle, but one I fight for my daughter. She now is able to attend school a couple days a week, loves her siblings and our dog, Ron, and her smile brightens all those who are fortunate to receive one. I’m writing this post to share a name and face. Addi is more than a pre-existing condition and deserves the right to have proper care and insurance offered.
