I still can't believe that for my dad's first birthday after they started dating, my mom got him a nail clipper with an American flag on it, not because he needed to clip his nails (even though he did) but to call attention to the weirdness of America's attitude towards the Iraq War and then we had that nail clipper in our house for twenty years until I broke it when I was fifteen.
