SLEEP- The Key To Happiness! I am often amazed at how something as simple as sleep, can control so much of the quality of our lives. In our home we have a saying - “sharing is not a choice.” I look at sleep through the same lens. SLEEP IS NOT A CHOICE- it’s mandatory. Mandatory for you, as parents, and mandatory for your kids. Without proper sleep you may experience some or all of the below symptoms: Groggy, foggy mind, irritable, lack of patience, frustration, easily set off, unhappy or just an overall sense of feeling down. None of these feel good and when all combined it’s miserable! Babies and kids who are not getting proper sleep are experiencing the exact same symptoms and feelings. We know how terrible we feel when we lack sleep, so when our kids are overtired or not getting proper sleep, how can we have any expectations? The answer is- we can’t.... Until you have met your kid’s basic needs of sleep, food and shelter. Once needs are met, you can begin to enforce further expectations. Babies and kids who lack quality sleep are tricky to reason with, over-react, lose their temper and have more meltdowns. During this state it’s next to impossible to expect them to behave properly, show manners, do homework, or show cooperation. So....if you or your kids are experiencing sleepiness symptoms then remember the quote above: “But, first sleep.!” If you follow this quote and make sleep your first and #1 priority and commit whole-heartedly you will notice a world of difference. Not only in your kids’ behaviour and temperament, but also in how YOU feel.
