Animal Man (after learning John Starr could be no help since he had gone mad) borrowed a defective time machine from the Time Masters (Bonnie Baxter, Rip Hunter, and Jeffery Smith) to try to prevent the murder of his wife and children in Animal Man 22, cover date April 1990. Due to the defective nature of the machine, all he was able to do was "haunt" his family. Also, the aliens who gave him his powers issued an ominous warning in the issue.
