you know what. i'm proud of me. maybe i'm a lil drunk but i'm about to graduate with a bachelors in biology, a certification in microbiology, and a specialization in immunology and bacteriology, along with a research position with the best professor i've ever had. my mom hates me and kicked me out but i'm the first person/woman in my family to get a degree and i'm just feeling hopeful for the first time in.... a long time, tbh

What this video demonstrates is a microscopes "depth of field." As you can see, as you move the fine focus, whatever you're viewing under the microscope (in this case, D. latum eggs) will go in and out of focus as you move into different planes.

Hello to all my fellow Tumblr friends. I am currently trying to raise money to fund my research trip to Colombia this summer. I am a graduate student getting my Master of Public Health. My project is to determine the prevalence of Paraganimus species in freshwater crabs. This is important because this parasite, also known as a lung fluke, can encyst in the lungs and survive for 20+ years and even present with TB like symptoms. This is a preventable disease by just simply cooking throughly. Additionally, this research is in conjunction with research to look at patterns of movement, behavior, and range of habitats that will be used to compare to invasive species and ecological movement of crabs with climate change using prediction modeling. My grad student position is at another institution so I do not get tuition reimbursement and the institution is small and doesn't have the funds to pay for me to go. Trypanosoma brucei, a protozoan parasite, is the causative agent of African sleeping sickness in humans (T. b. gambiense and T. b. rhodesiense) and nagana in cattle (T. b. brucei). These diseases result in much economic hardship and morbidity in Sub-Saharan Africa. The life cycle of these organisms requires an insect vector and a mammalian host. Two T. brucei parasites (blue pseudocolor) are pictured in close interaction with innate immune cells in the liver of an infected mouse. These interactions will probably result in phagocytosis of the parasite.
