I have literally spent the last week talking about nothing else other than this au. It started off from this conversation with @toffeeinhun and quickly grew legs:

Me: JWS is a VIP in squid game and he fights Inho for Gihun’s love. Toffee: Why would you do that to JWS? He deserves better 😂 Why can’t he be another player? Me: JWS is too cool to be a player Toffee: He’s too cool to be a VIP 😭 Me: Maybe he can be Inho’s ex-detective partner who helps Junho track down the games Toffee: Aww Inho’s bestie

And so the They Were Partners AU was born. Also let’s be real In-ho needs a bestie who isn’t involved in the games! 🤣 Except I’m not actually into rpf, so we decided this was a Hunt/Squid Game crossover. In that movie, Kim Jung-do is played by JWS, and Park Pyong-ho is played by LJJ; they’re spies who think the other is a double agent for North Korea.

Ngl the lore for this au spans 30 years so here's the gist of what we have so far! Let’s go way back to 1995! In-ho meets Kim Jung-do while he’s at university at KNPU– not only were they partners, THEY WERE ROOMMATES!! And they could have been on their way to academic rivals or some nonsense, but then Jung-do comes back to the dorm one day and finds In-ho surrounded by a chaotic mountain of kids toys in the midst of babysitting three year old Jun-ho, and the rest is history! They take turns studying for exams, taking care of Jun-ho when In-ho’s stepmom is busy, and when they graduate they end up working at the same precinct and becoming partners.

Jun-ho grows up with not one hyung, but two! 💞 Yes, we gave Jun-ho two hyungs in this au to make up for the fact that one abandons him to run death games… And Jun-ho enjoys razzing them both about their love lifes, even though Jung-do insists he’s not attracted to rival detective Park Pyong-ho, he just thinks he’s “suspicious” 👀

Unfortunately, this is squid game so maybe we oversold how fluffy this au is because the events of the games still happen. In-ho disappears to become Frontman, but Jun-ho isn’t alone in his search for the island this time because Jung-do is along for the ride as well. 

(Also yes, In-ho’s love interest looks exactly the same as Jung-do’s love interest– it’s just a coincidence 🤣)
