Santa Rosa Lagoon in Nevado Tres Cruces National Park, Chile Nevado Tres Cruces National Park is named after a trio of soaring Andean peaks, but this nature preserve encompasses far more than mountains. Located in the Atacama region, a remote portion of northern Chile, the park contains the Salar de Maricunga, a salt flat spanning more than 20,000 acres. And this desert ecosystem also offers life-sustaining wetlands—we're looking here at the shallows of Santa Rosa Lagoon, the largest of two lakes in the park. Andean flamingos call this hypersaline lake home, and guanacos and vicuñas roam the area.
