Idk if ur the person to go to for this, but aaaa. So, for a graduation present my parents got me a three month old green cheek conure and I already love him so much! He’s very sweet and smart. I know that birds bite, and had come to terms that my own would definitely bite years ago. We’ve had a grouchy cockatiel for longer than I’ve been alive, and biting is normal for us. I was just wondering if there was a way to curb biting (though he hasn’t made me bleed yet) or encourage other behavior? Thx
Hey! So, I’m no expert, and if any of my fellow bird blogs want to chime in, please feel free to do so!
From my experience, I mostly get bit by birds that have not been handled much or ones that I am afraid of. Like, when I first got Punk, he had only been handled occasionally, and he was the biggest bird I had ever been around. I got bit A LOT in our early days together.
Discouraging biting is as simple as ignoring it. I know that’s hard when you’re literally bleeding, but you should remain calm when you get bit and immediately follow it up by setting your bird down or putting them in their cage. Reacting in any other way is justing giving your bird attention and making them believe they get more attention when they bite.
I hope this helps!
