Homayoun Ershadi (1947-2025)
The Iranian actor, known for his debut role in Taste of Cherry (1997), died on Tuesday, at the age of 78 after his battle with cancer.
Ershadi was an architect in Iran for many years. Following the Iranian revolution, he and his family relocated to Canada. He went back to Iran following his divorce and settled in Tehran.
Then one day, while he was sitting in his car in a traffic signal, a man tapped his window to roll down, introduced himself as Abbas Kiarostami, the famous Iranian filmmaker. The director said, “I want to make a film. Would you like to be in it?”
That chance encounter led to his breakout role in Taste of Cherry (1997) where he played a middle-age man contemplating his suicide and starts driving around the city recruiting people willing to carry out the task. The film won the Palme d'Or at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival (shared with The Eel).
Following his performance in Taste of Cherry, Ershadi's acting career took off, and in less than three decades would build over 90 acting credits. He received international fame when he got cast in films including March Forster's The Kite Runner (2007), Alejandro Amenábar's Agora (2009), Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty (2012), and Hassan Nazer's UK-set Utopia (2015).
He was survived by his two kids and grandchildren.

A Conversation With Martin Bowes Of Attrition
Coventry, a long-established industrial city in central England was severely bombed during the Second World War. This bleak landscape of ruins was the birthplace of Martin Bowes. The young art-school student was so intrigued by the burgeoning punk scene, along with his brother and a few friends began their own raggedy combo. Martin admits to not being a very proficient musician which led him to…
