We're running low, but there are some of these left! Three extinct North American birds heralding extinction before a setting sun. The most famous is the Passenger Pigeon. But the Ivory Billed Woodpecker has been I'm the news as of late, with thus far unconfirmed sightings. But maybe the least we'll known, is the Carolina Parakeet, a kind of conure once found in the warm American South. #passengerpigeon #ivorybilledwoodpecker #carolinaparakeet #extinct #extinction #sciart #nativewildlife #wildlifepin #nature #enamelpin #birds #birder #northamericanbirds #pigeon #woodpecker #conure (at Scribbles Art Collective) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiRLk6VARxI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Collie insists that she knows where Wilson’s crow friend is.
“It’s just this way!” She calls to the Pigeon.
Wilson isn’t so sure about this strange bird and her antics.

“MARTHA, THE LAST PASSENGER PIGEON”
By John A. Ruthven
Once the most numerous bird in the U.S., the last passenger pigeon died in 1914 despite the best efforts of the Cincinnati Nature Center to keep the species alive. 10 years later Cincinnati wildlife artist and conservationist John Ruthven was born and before long he had been dubbed the 20th century Audubon. To celebrate Cincinnati’s ongoing commitment to wildlife preservation and commemorate the 100th anniversary of Martha’s death Ruthven worked with an ArtWorks Cincinnati team of artists and youth apprentices led by Tim Parsley to create this large-scale reproduction of his 40-year-old work depicting Martha and her flock soaring over the historic Bird Run at the Cincinnati Zoo.

One hundred and seven years ago today the last known Passenger Pigeon, Martha, died. Martha was living at the Cincinnati Zoo and thought to be between 28 and 29 years old. At one point Passenger Pigeons were the most abundant bird on the planet, with estimates of between 3 and 5 billion individuals. Unfortunately, due to hunting on a massive scale and habitat destruction they went extinct in a relatively short time. This carving of a Passenger Pigeon was created by Bob Spear, and the mural in the background was painted by Libby Davidson. #passengerPigeon #ExtinctBirds #ectopistesmigratorius (at Birds of Vermont Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTSnEz9vlyT/?utm_medium=tumblr
