Cheesey Bites
If you live in an American city, chances are you are familiar with the term "Restaurant Week," an event that originated in New York, wherein restaurants put together $35 prix-fixe meals in attempts to bring an otherwise unconscionably priced, three-course meal to the public. And as well-intentioned as it sounds, it has come to be known as one of the most divided culinary events nationwide. There are those who are thrilled by the great deals and the chance to explore new cuisines on the cheap, while the hardcore "foodies," as they like to be called, scoff at the allegedly pared down portions. And ask any member of the restaurant industry and they'll tell you it is by far the four most dreaded weeks out of their year, as it brings out non-restaurant goer customers, unaccustomed to the standard norms of the restaurant world; ie the tips!!
So why even bring up a topic that is already so well known and debated? Well beginning tomorrow February 24th and running through Saturday March 2nd, East Passyunk Ave. has decided to hold their first ever restaurant week. And can you believe it? It's a restaurant week that actually runs for one week! What a revolutionary idea. Also unique to the Passyunk Ave. event, is that there are three tiers of pricing: $15 (mostly for lunch menus), $25 and $35. Along with the price flexibility, they will be featuring off-the menu items and drink pairings which are two aspects absent from most Center City Restaurant Week menus. It's also an excuse to head down to South Philly and enjoy not only they're great restaurants, but also all the local shops that line the avenue. So even if you are a self-proclaimed-Restaurant-Week-hater, you may want to check this one out. It has the potential to possibly be everything Restaurant Week never was.
