Stickman POV:
Ascension in the Ultradead Mall is considered dangerous.
But, for Stickman, it meant answers. The mall had suddenly appeared after the seventh challenge, and the contestants had been on the search for host, Bean, ever since. But such a massive area lead for more exploration and less investigation. That of which, were not any of Stickman's ideas.
A little while earlier, Stickman had a nightmare. A nightmare involving Bean. Though it might've just been something the subconscious mind cooked up, They decided that they're not going to take any chances. Bean's sudden disappearance only strengthened his beliefs that something was wrong, and that he was the only one who could try to understand him. Wait.. is that mean to consider?
...Whatever, not the point. Under the rundown escalator, Stickman pushed away some vines that were blocking his vision. It seemed to Billboard, that Stickman was planning to go out, as he usually never casually wears his white scarf when relaxing. "Are you... going somewhere?" He asked, in which he got no response. Standing up, he grabbed Stickman's scarf, preventing him from progressing forward.
Stickman wasn't exactly pissed off by this action, but still showed a sign of disappointment upon being halted by Billboard. He turned around to face him:
"I'm going alone," Stickman told to him, in a low voice. "Don't follow me." It wasn't of any rude intention, but he insisted that it was for his own good.
Billboard was about to just let him go, but Spellbook suddenly appeared in front of him, another one blocking his way. She was cheerful as ever, either oblivious, ignorant, or simply doesn't ever have a care in the world about the whole "We-are-literally-trapped-in-a-mall-and-could-die-at-any moment" situation. Stickman jumped back at her surprise arrival.
"Stickbuddy! You know not to go alone, right? You told us this day one!" Spellbook tapped her chin, "Or.. was it two? Either way, I don't think you want another "get attacked by a giant spore creature and almost die" situation, because if you don't remember, that's what happened to Billboard!"
"Spellbook! That's not really appropriate!" Billboard exclaimed, appearing slightly offended. He doesnt usually yell, so his voice cracked saying that. "Just bringing some awareness," she responded, with a wink. For lack of context, the team short of a few members were on the fifth floor with some others from team Bacon Bread. Some sort of fungal amalgamation was without a shred of a doubt hostile, and Billboard dodged an attack, infecting his already injured eye.
She turned to face Stickman again and offered him her hand. "We're not necessarily asking you not to leave, but we just don't want another person to get hurt!"
Stickman grabbed his scarf nervously, "Sorry, Spellbook, but I said I'm going alone. I know this is hypocritical of what I said earlier, but what I'm doing is my own choice, and I don't want you getting hurt. If I don't return, it doesn't matter.." He paused to consider what he said, "..Actually it kinda does... No, it ABSOLUTELY does.. Jeez, I'm having problems today..."
Spellbook looked at him sideways. "Err- regardless," he interrupted himself, "I'll be on my way now, if you'll excuse me." They expected her to move, but she didn't. Instead she put her hand on their shoulders. "That's okay, Stickman! But don't say I didn't warn you!" Patting him on the back, she pushed him towards the front of the escalator, some vines hitting his face. Billboard just stayed behind, with Watermelon, who just woke up from a nap she took earlier.
Dusting herself off, Spellbook dropped Stickman off at what might just be his final destination.
"Well, tell us all about your journey when you get back! I'm gonna go back with Watermelon and Billboard under the escalator if you need us-"
"I'll know where you guys are, don't worry about me," Stickman interrupted, but she was already gone. Sighing of relief and anticipation, he took his first steps up the escalator, which he actually had to use as regular stairs due to it being run down.
He walked passed stores that had unusually familiar items, and pictures of people he hadn't met. Perhaps it held some form of importance, but that's a question reserved for later. His eyes focused forward upon reuniting with the host. It was no longer about finding answers, but about Bean himself.
When was the last time he had seen him, again? Right, not too long ago, on the ground floor.
In that moment, he looked up and saw Bean staring at him from above, a moment where they locked eyes for what seemed like an eternity. But Bean didn't have a look of anger, but more, regret. Like he knows Stickman is the one person who could understand him. The others didn't notice the two stare at each other, until Bean quickly hurried away. Was it the look in his eyes that motivated him to talk again? Or was it that single connection the two felt? Regardless, he's here for one thing only, and there's no use in turning back.
Before he knew it, he had arrived at the sixth floor, the floor he believed he hides himself in. Wandering around, it was apparent that this floor had far more greenery and fungal spores than the others. That of course, is assuming the further floors don't have any, but that isn't his main focus. Making his way to darker corners of the floor, he didn't have a flashlight, so he would have to rely on his limited vision. Still, no Bean.
But, he was not frustrated, but more determined to meet him than ever. Why is he hiding himself? What is he hiding? Who are the people in the pictures? More importantly, will he want to talk to him? All these thoughts scattered his mind, and it brought him a headache... or it was likely just the spores. He had inferred that they may be contagious.
After zero signs of ever finding Bean, he decided to call out his name:
"Hello? Bean? Are you there?" He cried, but no one answered. So, he spoke again:
"Bean, it's just me, Stickman. I just want to talk to you."
Suddenly, he heard sounds coming from behind him, approaching from the darkness. The shine of glasses made him startled. It really was Bean.. but he was different. He looked different than he last remembered him.
His face is covered in a fungal bush, with vines and other mushrooms surrounding his body. It was as if his own powers had taken over him.
Bean could notice Stickman's expression of bewilderment, but he is not surprised by this. The two only stared at each other for what felt like years, just like their last encounter. They weren't exactly close, but every moment with each other felt like they were frozen in time, unbothered by the events and catastrophes of the world.
Stickman was mainly focused on his eyes, they were as dark and empty as a void, but a void that's weirdly comforting. He could easily get lost in his gaze as he glared at him emotionlessly.
"What are you doing here," asked Bean, "You should leave."
Stickman snapped back to reality, "I'm not going to. I just want to talk."
"About what?"
Stickman paused, nervously fiddling with his scarf. "I think something is troubling you. And frankly, there's lots of things troubling me..." They avoided eye contact, "I just thought I'd-"
"Why do you persist?"
Silence. From both Bean and Stickman.
"Do you really think you could fix everything? What's done is done, Stickman. I know what you're trying to do and it's not going to work."
Silence from Stickman again. He gripped his scarf for a while, and then let go. "It's not about that, I'm not trying to fix things, I just think you need someone to talk to."
Bean turned away from him. "What I need is to be left alone."
Stickman held his hand out to him, "You isolating yourself is the problem, Bean. I don't think the other contestants really understand what you're going through, but I do, so please-"
Bean turned himself back around and snapped his fingers. With a sudden "crack" a trail of spores spawned beneath his feet, narrowly harming Stickman if he hadn't dodged in time. Even if he almost died, he still does not move. Bean is beginning to get frustrated.
"Why are you not afraid of me? I could have killed you."
"Because I know you didn't actually want to hurt me. I truly want to understand you." Stickman softened his expression. It may have been true, Bean never intended to hurt Stickman, nor hurt anyone in the first place. His head began to hurt.
Bean groaned and began to yell out of frustration, "Ugh, why?! Why do you even care, Stickman?! All I've done was hurt everyone, and this, right here, all of it, is what it get. I've changed, Stickman, and not for the better."
"But Bean, we- no, I will love you no matter how you change!"
Bean froze up. That was something he never expected to hear.
"I don't care what you've done in the past, I don't care what you've done in the present. You have made mistakes, Bean, and honestly? So have I. No matter how many times you've slipped up, no matter how many times you think you've hurt people, there will always be someone who will forgive you."
Stickman's voice was breaking as tears began to form from his emotions.
"And that someone.. is me!"
Bean is completely stunned. He wants to thank him, but something plaguing his mind is not letting him. He really does get me, but why..?
Holding himself like he's in pain, Bean looked up at Stickman with a mix of fear and shock in his eyes. Stickman could tell that something was wrong. He held his hand out to him, ignoring the possibility of Bean harming him. This wasn't about making it out alive, it was just about Bean now.
"None of this is your fault, you never meant to hurt me, you never meant to hurt any of us..." He was going to finish his sentence, but looked in concern at Bean, who appeared to be struggling more than before. He was holding his head intensely, and avoiding eye contact.
"Bean, are you-"
"Stickman. You have to leave..!"
Stepping back, he had intended to scram. But he stood his ground. "No, I won't leave you alone! Please just let me help you-"
"No, Stickman, you're not listening! You need to run, as far as you can away from this place.. away from me!"
He did not heed his warning, but instead called out to him a second time, "Bean, are you okay?! Please, just tell me what's wrong!"
Before he knew it, tons of spores were forming from the ground. His whole body was wrapped around in vines, unable to move. By his actions, it seems Bean is attacking him, but from his behavior, he's intending to do the exact opposite. Bean was holding his arm as if trying to restrain himself from doing any further damage.
Stickman called his name again, but Bean probably didn't hear him well enough. He began to struggle trying to release themself from the vines, but there was so much going on that it was hard to do so efficiently. Stickman's vision began to cloud up, and the last thing he heard was Bean pleading for him to escape before he blacked out.
He gasped and woke up in a cold sweat, breathing heavily and holding his left arm, which has a slight injury on it. Before him was Spellbook and for some reason, Glasses.
"You know, I kinda did warn you not go off alone," Spellbook said, wrapping another layer of bandage around Stickman's arm. "But who am I to intrude on your master plans, hmm?" Stickman was both tired and confused, what had happened for him to wake up back at the ground floor? More importantly, where did he go?
"Where's Bean?! What's going on?!"
"The fact that you're more concerned about Bean confirms exactly what happened!" Glasses adjusted his uh.. glasses on his face and posed like he was a genius. Stickman appeared visibly confused, to which Glasses sighed and moved out of the way of the chalkboard that they just conveniently have. "Allow me to explain, stick boy!"
"Soooo... me and a few others were hearing total COMMOTION from the fifth floor. So we made our way upwards and totally spied on everything you did. Rock told us we shouldn't intervene because "you knew what you were doing," but literally fifteen minutes later we found you lights-out in vines! I mean, isn't that crazy! So, in order to get you out of that pickle, we tackled Bean, freed you, and carried you down six flights of stairs! I mean, do you know how much of a workout that is-"
"Stop, stop, Glasses, just- stop. Why did you attack Bean," stickman asked, sternly. His eyebrow twitched.
"Weeeellllll, because he attacked you of course! Who else put you in vines and didn't set you free? Plus, you literally passed out. I don't think you really knew much past that-"
"He wasn't trying to attack me, Glasses! This is serious! If I could've just stayed away longer.." He shoved the chalkboard on wheels aside, it sliding and hitting a tempered glass window. Glasses shrieked and ran towards the direction it rolled off to. Stickman turned towards the other direction he had went, "I'm going back up there, I just have to! Who knows what happened to-"
Spellbook blocked the way again, "Slow down there! I think Billboard already has this taken care of!"
"...Billboard? What do you mean?"
"Well, you were gone for quite a long time, so I sent Billboard off to follow you in secret! Y'know, he's the one who carried you all the way back here!"
Stickman shook his head, "No, you're missing the point, Spellbook. I specifically said that it would he too dangerous for any of you to follow me, now I don't know if Billboard's okay, and Bean... God!.."
Stickman's thoughts were rapidly escaping his mind, until Spellbook shushed him. "I think you should probably lie back down, Stickman! Watermelon and I will be by your side if you need!" Stickman was about to say something, but realized it's no use in fighting back. He's too tired to go after Billboard, and it's not like the others will allow him to leave.
But, he does hope that Bean and Billboard are okay, and that his words had reached him. He did genuinely mean every last word, including the ones about love. All he could do is hope that Billboard could understand Bean the same way he does. He looked to the ceiling, then down at his hands, finding himself twiddling his thumbs.
