There’s been a  lot of power in women (especially cis women) reclaiming the colour pink, and their own femininity lately, and I think a lot of you who haven’t experienced this situation might have some confusion, and as to why some might be so vehement about protecting our right to be feminine and girly.

As kids, especially those of us with brothers, or having been around a lot of boys were taught about how just bad being girly or pink was. That being pink was weak, and gross. It was like this thing about you, that you had to hide. I was regarded as a tomboy, and hated anything pink, and you could not make me pink things up. This eventually became some self loathing and misogyny.

As we grew, and slowly began to think more for ourselves, and maybe examined our own thoughts we stopped hating everything that was feminine, and realized that liking ponies, and being into frilly dresses and pink things was never the problem. We never liked the idea of being forced into that and then being told it made you inferior. So instead of blaming the authority that put us into that position, we blamed the pink for being weak.

So we grew and maybe tried the dresses, and the make up and the pink pastel fluffiness, and it was freeing, empowering to know that we don’t need to pretend to be a mirror of the tough masculine figures in our lives to be able to be ourselves. Sometimes standing in nothing but pink does make you feel powerful, for daring to be the thing that you’ve been told is weak, but knowing how strong you are.
