my favorite tumblr-er catminecraft what are your thoughts on the past life finale...
this season, as well as the ending of it, can be perfectly encapsulates as a statement of the pointlessness of the rules if nobody is willing to follow them. Because Genuinely, what is the point of making rules, if a few players can disregard them with not even no concequences, but praise? What is the point of estabilishing the base rules of a social death game, if the rules up and change for certain people, and on a whim? What was the point of the secret society, what was the point of changing the boogeyman rules, what was the point of estabilishing that a red life is an honor that gives you the permission of being hostile?
In previous seasons, being a red life gave you power among other players, and it was the very basis of giving the life series an identity of its own; the hierarchy of lives separated it from any other survival smp on the scene.
The Main issue, imo, is that grian actively operates on his own perception of what makes the life series unique, rather than understanding it as a closed off sub-species of the social roleplay / survival genre that fans really love it for. His understanding, as much as i can tell as a viewer, is that its nothing more special than a hardcore server.
This downright catastrophical misunderstanding is what i believe is currently causing the rift between the fandom space and the creators; wether or not you think that this player was in the right to do so, you cant argue that they have bended the rules, or straight up created the rules to further their own benefit. Estabilished rules that have given the series its own identity for ages suddenly dont seem to matter all that much anymore. 8 player kill for a gimmick just created (and not elaborated upon) reason is okay for him, no concequences please, but a 3 player kill (and final elimination) based upon the estabilished rules of the game is not only met with threats and mocking, but also fandom hostility.
Its not fair, right? Its not fair they ganged up on the villies. Its not fair Jimmy killed Pearl. No concequences please. You cant play with estabilished rules in mind, of course. (No matter how the players felt about this situation, im talking about the disagreement within the fandom if the situation was unfair or not).
Being a Joel pov main, seeing him struggle to understand this new reality with Scott was really frustrating from a longtime viewers perspective. Because truly Why was Scott shooting at him. This is where fan opinions diverge to an uncomfortable degree— was that fair? was that okay? surely it was, since the players arent saying anything about it, but it feels as though the CCs are deceiving us with false promises of what the series will be. They can do whatever they want with their series of course, i just wish they.. .. stuck with what they promised us the rules will be, i guess 🤷
Reading some notes and revicing some things before I went to work the other day. Good thing to read up on geriatrics (elderly people) when you are working at a hospital. Thats one patient group you will always meet!
