Revenge Runs Deep by Pat Young
Bullies need to be taught a lesson...or so a group of people decide after one of the bullies victims commits suicide. What the lesson will be and what some seeking might intend may not be one and the same.
Thomas Smeaton IS a bully and from reading the book it seems he has always been one. His interactions within this book are manipulative, mean and malignant. His ego, character and personality are those of someone I hope to never encounter in real life. I knew going in what the story would be about (from the book blurb) but the actual details of how each person is treated, impacted and reacts to the bullying Smeaton deals out is what this story is truly about. That so many are willing to work together is interesting and then the addition of how the revenge seekers actually come together, form a plan and implement it kept me glued to the story until it ended.
I really don’t want to give away what happens so I will say:
* Lead characters do some soul searching
* Personal values are looked at and questioned by individuals in the story
* Backstories are shared
* The ripple effect of one action upon many is explored
* The idea of “change” and whether or not a person CAN change is considered
* Nature versus nurture came to mind
* There are twists and turns
* Not all is happily ever after for everyone at the end of the book
* And...a whole lot more
Did I enjoy this book: That’s a toughie since the topic is not necessarily one to be enjoyed. I did enjoy the writing and the way the story made me think and question and wonder what I might do in a similar situation.
Would I read more books by this author? Yes
