Project Icarus #3
Project Icarus #3 BlackBox Comics 2020 Written by Andy Owens Pencilled by Patrick Blaine Inked by Andy Owens Coloured by Teo Gonzalez Lettered by Dezi Sienty Project Icarus Max and Liz search for clues into the Blackfire corporation. Max will put his healing ability to the test against a villain that can not only control, but become fire. And what nefarious plan does the Slasher have for our heroes? Oh this just keeps getting better and better with each issue. Which is precisely what’s supposed to be happening but I just had to say it out loud because I’ll be damned if this did just kick things up a notch. So the Slasher as he was crudely named by the media dosed Max with the serum just to see what would happen, ya know for kicks. He’s also sent out former convicts, okay they’ve “escaped” from prison, after giving them the serum to gain powers. All he wants to do is cause mayhem, panic and chaos. Now that’s not too much to ask for is it? I am thoroughly enjoying the way that this is being told. From the corporate cover-up and the manhunt for these escaped men to Max going to find a woman who he once arrested for help. All of this creates this crazy atmosphere but Andy is playing this like it’s a home chemistry set that he’s actually mastered. The potion is volatile but stable and we can see and feel the underlying tension being built up within these pages and it’s kind of an adrenaline rush if you ask me. The way we see the story & plot development unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented extremely well. The character development that we see is really quite good. I like seeing how they act and react to the situations and circumstances they find themselves in. The way this is structured is fantastic and how we see the logical progression of the story is believable in so many ways. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way we see how everything works together to create the books ebb & flow. I am super impressed with what I am seeing within these pages. The Way Max and Liz interact with one another feels refreshing to me. It isn’t forced or strained, it’s two folks who have legitimately found themselves together in a situation beyond their control and watching them together I think is what both of them needed in their lives. The interiors here are so incredibly on point. I love how the linework is being utilised through its varying weights and with different techniques to bring out the attention to detail that we see. From something as innocuous as being out in casual wear to seeing men strung up with the aftermath of a slice and dice session it doesn’t what it is it all gets the same treatment and it kind of makes me feel chuffed. The way that we see backgrounds being utilised throughout is great as they not only enhance the moment but they also work well within the composition of the panels to bring us depth perception, a sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope to the book. Kudo’s to the colouring we see as well. I love the gradation effect we see in Liz’s hair and that alongside some of the more traditional uses, colour blocking or just saturation, really help to give this book so even more incredible dimension. How we see the various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work is divine as it really showcases a true talent when it comes to understanding colour. This series is superbly strong, interesting and extremely engaging for the reader. There are surprises galore as well as a few little things that are just these clever little moments which highlight the world we live in today. BlackBox comics are the up and coming books that you need to be aware of because there’s simply no denying the kind of talent that is on display.
Project Icarus #2
Project Icarus #2 Blackbox Comics 2020 Written & Inked by Andy Owens Pencilled by Patrick Blaine Coloured by Teo Gonzalez Lettered by Dezi Sienty With nowhere to turn for help, Max solicits a hacker, a woman he locked up years ago. Will she be able to help him? I discovered Blackbox last year and I have to tell you all that this company is my find of the year and it continues to grow. They've got some absolute killer titles in both their writing and interior artwork that firmly puts this in the best new company category unequivocally. So if you want some fresh, new innovative storytelling then you need to introduce yourself to Blackbox Comics. This a phenomenal story so far and the way that this is being told through how we see the sequence of events unfolding and how the reader learns information is presented so incredibly well. After the events of last issue left Max more than a little confused by the turn of events we pick up here with him returning to work “to clean out his stuff.” This is when he discovers a lot more than he was expecting and sets him off in a new direction and with a new purpose. Just the way that this story flows is great and it has that ring about it where you know Andy is able to create this natural feel to it even with all the surreal things going on around him. The character development that we see here is sensational. I like how we see Max who's former reputation as a drunk still haunts him and is literally perfect when it comes to underestimating him right now. Also I really like the introduction of the hacker and her whole presence here which elevates the whole dynamic that we see. The pacing here is beyond great and as it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way as well as delivering one hell of beautiful cliffhanger ending. This is storytelling the way it was meant to be. Gritty, dark and yet still there's light and hope within this as well so that our imagination is engaged and we are left just wanting, simply wanting. The time taken to really get things set up and then delivered in such a fashion that excites the reader and brings the action you crave but balanced with this story. Andy just kind of emerges here as a force to be reckoned with in how he's got this layered and how the complexity of the actions taken and brings everything to us through the strength of the characterisation. The interiors are beautifully done as well. The linework we see shows us this strong steady hand that utilises the varying weights to bring out this quality work. The level of attention to detail that we see here whether it's the crosshatching for the stubble or the buildings in the background what we see is precisely what Patrick intends. Speaking of backgrounds damn they are beautifully utilised throughout the book and how the work within the composition in the panels create so dynamite depth perception, scale and that overall sense of size and scope of the book. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show such a marvellous eye for storytelling. The colour work is amazingly gorgeous and whether it's gradation in the hair or the tattoo's which we see the way the various hues and tones within the colours bringing us shading, highlights and shadow work is impeccable. I cannot stress enough how good this book is. The writing, the story line and the way we see the characters and how all this works weaving about and through each other shows such skill and talent. With the level and quality of the writing and artwork here Blackbox continues to grow into this little company that could and does.
Project Icarus #1
Project Icarus #1 Advance Review Blackbox Comics 2020 On Sale Jan 29th 2020 Written & Inked by Andy Owens Illustrated by Patrick Blaine Coloured by Teo Gonzalez & Claudia Giulinai Lettered by Dezi Sienty Cop turned Correction Officer, Max, is unknowingly thrown into a blood bath when an experiment on the infamous killer "The Slasher" goes wrong. Absolute Power corrupts absolutely is how the saying goes and sometimes I find it interesting when we meet someone who is corrupted completely before even gaining any power whatsoever. Our mysterious man who is the first person we meet is one such person whom I believe was born without a soul. His thirst for money and power is all that he wants and he'll do anything to get it. So in my humble opinion he's the one the devil sold his soul to. Alright so if you haven't been able to tell yet I am more than impressed with what Andy is doing here and how we see the characters and how we form opinions of them. The story & plot development that we see here with how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is laid down before us extremely well. I really am loving the way that this story takes us through these events and circumstances and shows us the direction the story is taking but it doesn't put down anything in stone. Like time the story is nicely fluid so that while we can get swept up in it's flow you have no idea when or if the rapids will hit. The character development really is utterly phenomenal and that applies to all the characters we meet throughout the issue. Even to the point where as a reader I have already begun to suspect some individuals of not being whom they seem. The pacing is fantastic as it takes on the journey through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way all of which help to create the books ebb & flow. I found myself engaged in this story very quickly and as my mind wandered through a world of possibilities I realised that this was already under my skin and it's something that I want, nay need, to see more of. Not just of Max who's the series good guy, but of our mysterious bad guy as well because let's face it the villain always tends to be inherently more interesting. Although Max is flawed and complex and if I may say pretty damn hot so seeing more of him, more of him hint, is always a good thing. The interiors here are really extremely well done. The linework that we see and how the varying weights are utilised to bring out the attention to detail show a strong and steady hand. Also that we see backgrounds as often as we do and how they incorporate into the composition inside the panels show this great depth perception, scale and bring an overall sense of size and scope to the book. I like how we see faces and facial expressions as they really do bring that extra level of characterisation that words alone can't do. I really like the linework and I see so much talent here as well. The creativity and imagination on display is great and once the crazy starts well that just gets even better. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show this stellar eye for storytelling. The colour work is great! There are different techniques here for different effects, the blood for example has it's own deal that some frakkin amazing work. The colour blocking utilising the various hues and tones within any given colour to create the shading, highlights and shadow work are beautifully rendered. There is some phenomenal talent on display with the interiors here. The lettering we see is significantly important as well and to see how that's utilised in various ways is impressive as well something most overlook. So this is a first issue extravaganza as it not just introduces us to the story, the characters and this world but it grabs you by the collar and pulls you into its embrace. It pulls you in hard too like you've been away from your significant other for six months and suddenly it's time to unleash. Blackbox is one of those publishers I discovered last year and this year it looks like it's going to make it's mark in the industry and rise the ranks to one of those you can't live without.
