“A little darling is a piece of writing, sometimes as short as a single word and sometimes as long as a whole scene, that the writer thinks is brilliant, profound, pithy, or jarring--but no one else does. ... The first sentence of a manuscript is the primary nesting place of darlings because the opening is the genesis of the whole book.” p. 39-40
- Take this opportunity to rewrite the opening paragraph of at least one work in progress. Use nothing from the original paragraph, aside from character name/s, if applicable. Be prepared to sacrifice your opening if it will save the story. Be honest with yourself. Is your opening a little darling?
