Book Review 117 - Of Merchants and Heroes

Of Merchants and Heroes by Paul Waters is a historical fiction novel set in the Greco Roman world in the third century BCE. Philip the fifth of Macedon is getting ready to attack the Greek city states, threatening the Roman Republic and its people. It is during this conflict we meet Marcus, a young Roman travelling with his father to Corfu when pirates attack their ship, killing Marcus' father. Marcus swears revenge on the pirates and this quest takes him all over the Greco Roman world, becoming a confidant of powerful men until he finds himself in the middle of the conflict between the Greeks and the Macedonians and a destiny that he never expected.

This story was full of action, adventure, politics and romance and set in an era that I have never found a book set in before. Marcus is a great lead and has you hooked from his first appearance and intrigued as you wonder how and what type of role he is going to play in the historical events taking place around him.
