When the Stars Go Dark was a Mystery pick from #botm “Anna Hart is a detective in San Francisco. A personal tragedy makes her flee to the last place she lived as a high-schooler. Where the only foster parents who ever cared about her had taught her so much. She finds herself pulled into a case of a missing girl. And knows the only redemption will be in finding her.” I have not read anything by McLain before but I understand this is her first thriller. The setting is perfect - the dark forests of Northern California. I have never been there but McLain’s descriptions make you feel like you are there. Anna has a tough story as a former foster kid. And once you know exactly what happened to her you will sob. Her obsession to find the missing girl drives the story. She keeps coming back to her friend that had disappeared twenty years ago, wanting to save this one. McLain writes a lot about what draws a victim to a predator and the psychology of it. This is the first book I’ve seen that looks at that angle. McLain also uses some real-life abductions in her narrative. The killer is a surprise and the ending is wild 😮 There are many dark moments here. I hope that McLain will give us more Anna Hart stories.
