Nicole: “This book was given to me by a doctor. He’s really cute. Right now he’s doing his residency in Vermont but I guess you could say we’re dating. He’s going to be a radiologist and the story is about a doctor who’s diagnosed with cancer. It’s really beautifully written. I’m going to see him this weekend and we’re going to have a book discussion. It’s such a crazy, full loop experience because my brother has a terminal neurological illness. He is 33 and has spinal cancer. When Breath Becomes Air By Paul Kalanithi In the forward to this book, Abraham Verghese writes that in reading Paul’s words he came to know him, which sums up the experience you get from reading this book.  Paul presents his thoughts on the life he led and the excruciating process of coming to terms with the end of it. While reading his thoughts in this book, I was confronted with how much, as a people, we avoid discussing the universal constant that is death. In avoiding this conversation we are not living, instead we trick our minds into thinking there is more time to do the things that matter to us.  Paul, confronted with his immortality, chose to fill his limited time with the things that mattered to him. He worked within the confines of time available and focused on what he valued, and because of his decision to keep living, we have this book.  I have long since made my peace with death and the simple fact that it is inevitable. On the other hand, living is tricky and I’m learning to make, each day, contribute to things I value and consider important. A close friend suggested I read this book “When Breath Becomes Air” and as soon as I started reading, I couldn’t stop. I was done in less than a week which is fast for me considering reading for leisure was never my strong point (always made excuses that I was too busy) but I think the power a good book has is that you don’t want to stop reading because you’re grasping on to what happens next and the emotions that the book takes you on is incredible. If you haven’t read it, I suggest you read it. It gives a different perspective on client-centered from a doctor turned patient point of view which is really interesting if you’re going into the medical field. It humanizes the both doctor and patient. Anyway, fast forward a few weeks and the same close friend invites me to attend a conference that one of her role models was giving a talk on palliative care. Lo and behold, the widow of the author of that book, Lucy Kalanithi, was also part of the panel and gave such a beautiful talk about patient care and talked about her husband and his book. I fangirled so hard. I’m so glad I built up the courage to ask her to sign my book and get a picture with her, but lost my phone along with that picture shortly after 😭 but I’m glad I have this autographed book. That conference was very inspirational and it was from that experience that I continued to attend more talks with other HCPs because they remind me of the why? for wanting to become an occupational therapist. I suggest attending local talks in your area, researching book signings, attending local TED talks, or even attending nation wide conferences. #book 7 in the #20booksin2020 #challenge #WhenBreathBecomesAir by #PaulKalanithi I had been wanting to read this book for years ever since I saw #LucyKalanithi on #GoodMorningAmerica https://youtu.be/jWVIsS7-8D4 It wasn’t until yesterday that I finally got my hands on it at the library. I confess, it was hella triggering because years later, watching my dad die of #cancer remains the most difficult and painful thing I’ve gone through in life, and something I’m still struggling to deal with. I finished the book awhile ago tonight and I am still crying as I type this post, like full on #uglycry too. How fitting that I’m posting this on #WorldCancerDay You bet your ass I am NOT reading Joe Biden’s book about the #death of his son next. Chelsea Handler’s book was a lot about death too and I don’t think I can handle another one so soon.
