(A Short) Introduction to the United Tribes of Shili

In the millennia since the Togruta evolved from their common ancestor into the species they are today, they have traveled and settled across many a diverse landscape, forming numerous tribes that still hold relevance, even in our Post-Empire galaxy. These groups share many customs, such as forms of dress or etiquette; however, ecology has noted that each tribe has their own beliefs and rituals crafted by the environment in which they call home.

Below, biographies have been compiled and organized by geographical region and name. For a more in-depth look at the customs of a specific tribe, simply click on their name [TBL].

Northern

Aȥanabi/Axanabi

Pronounced: Ah-Z'ah-Nah-Bee Singular: Aȥanab (Pronounced: Ah-Z'ah-Nahb)

A tribe native to the Perritia Valley. This basin, other wise known as Windbreaker Canyon, is located between a mountain range with a wide river running between them. Because of this, the tribe built their settlements on the slopes of the mountains using terrace-style agriculture. The Aȥanabi's centuries-long practices have transformed the mountains into a iridescent paradise, providing cover from enemies and predators, and confusing some visitors into believing that the tribe's villages float on air. The fertile valley itself has provided protection from fierce weather but also plentiful produce for the tribe to consume and trade.

Southern

Kuan

Pronounced: Koo-Awn Singular: Kuani (Pronounced: Koo-Aw-Nee)

A tribe located around the Yawning Viper River. This system of water is known for its dark hue, caused by the color of the soil and the algae that flows through its channels. Centuries of living on this waterway has earned this tribe the secondary name of Blackwater. The Kuan are notorious for their cultivation of Obsidian Rice, a strain only found in the marketplaces of the South. This grain is not only used in their rituals and celebrations but is widely believed to have greater health benefits than its counterparts.

Tilek

Pronounced: Tih-Leh-K Singular: Tihlé (Pronounced: Tih-Lay)

A tribe that dwells in the Mayuda Forest. The land's Ȥonberra trees are some of the largest that Shili has to offer, able to grow to over 250 feet in height and their trunks at least 50 feet in diameter. The Tilek form their settlements around these testaments of nature, forming vertical communal halls out of their expansive trunks and storing their goods away from pests and predators in their thick branches. This tribe's way of living has left them better prepared in the case of akul attacks, able to hide away in the canopies of their grandiose homes.

Eastern

Daunej

Pronounced: Daw-Neh-J Singular Daunit (Pronounced: Daw-Neet)

A nomadic tribe found in the Eastern deserts of Shili. Known to travel in packs of four hundred or less, they subsist off the fauna, insects, and flora common to the region as they travel the trails detailed in their ancestral star maps. While most Togruta are known to blend with the turu grasses of the planet, the Daunej cloak themselves from prey using sand dunes and rock formations while hunting.

Western

Qilan

Pronounced: Chee-Lahn Singular: Qil (Pronounced: Ch-Ihl)

Commonly referred to as “The Burrowers” by the other tribes of the region, the Qilan build their homes within the cave systems of the Tuyan Mountains. Spending their days tending to farms above ground, they later retreat into the earth, believing that slumbering within strengthens their connection to their planet. Qilan villages are not as easily accessed as others and are normally entered either by boat through a subterranean river or via a concealed, high-up chamber that predators cannot reach.

Sheebara

Pronounced: Shee-Bahr-Ruh Singular: Sheebaran (Pronounced:Shee-Bahr-Ruhn)

A secluded island tribe located off the West Coast of the mainland. Known for their unique coral jewelry and pescetarian diet, they are of the few tribes that do not shepherd bovine creatures. Prior to Shili's integration into the Republic, this tribe welcomed visitors; however, once Humans started migrating to the planet, several incidents involving slave traders forced them close their doors to non-Togruta. Shili's military has this tribe under a specialized protection detail.

Central

Boramet

Pronounced: Bawr-Ruh-Meht Singular: Borametan (Pronounced: Bawr-Ruh-Meh-Tan)

A tribe that found its home around the prominent Maw Lake. The Maw was once one of Shili's largest volcanoes, but later became a caldera after an eruption emptied out its magma chamber. The following surface collapse and centuries of rainfall turned a once hazardous environment into a lush, vibrant forest surrounding what is now one of the planet's largest landlocked water masses. The Boramet build their villages on the peaks of what remains of the volcano's cone, using the looming trees as camouflage from large predators.

Yomé

Pronounced: Yoh-Mey Singular: Yoman (Pronounced: Yoh-Mahn)

A prestigious tribe that bears the honor of being the people of the first Regasa of Shili. Having made their home in the Janbé Valley over two thousand cycles ago, the surrounding mountains provide adequate protection from warring tribes but leaves their settlements in danger of akul attacks and natural disasters. This facet of their lifestyle have led the Yomé to have stern dispositions and a long history as proficient and adaptable warriors. This notoriety has led some political parties to believe that the right to rule still lives within this tribe.

Some of the characters in this post are originals of my own creation. All OCs will have an asterisk (*) next to their name so as to distinguish them from Canon and Legends characters. If anyone wants to submit their own OCs for this list, feel free to send me an ask or reply/comment on this post, and I will add them along with a link to your blog, ao3, etc.

Also, as some characters do not have surnames, I've taken the liberty to give them one. I've decided to follow the same naming convention given to Ahsoka who's surname is the Swahili word for “five”. Any canon or legends Togruta without a surname will follow suit with a language I've taken inspiration from while forming my version of Togruti.
