Episode 1380: My Beloved Tabina

Tabina’s name is a bit of an oddity, comparing the Japanese and the English versions of her name. I imagine that part of the localizers’ decision to put a B in her name is that the V sound does not exist in Arabic, and that “Tabina” is indeed an Arabic name - however, her name in Japanese is specifically タヴィーナ, not タビーナ, which would suggest that the Japanese authors intended her name to be “Tavina”. Japanese doesn’t have the V sound either, so historically, the B sound has been used as an approximation thereto - e.g., the Japanese word for “event” is ibento - but in modern days, the character ヴ (pronounced bu, same as ブ) has begun to be used as a way to differentiate between words intended to have a V versus words intended to have a B.
Due to the above, Japanese people often can confuse B and V sounds (similar to the more well-known difficulty between L and R sounds), so it’s possible that the Japanese authors simply incorrectly thought that “Tavina” was how to spell the Arabic name, and the English localizers corrected that mistake during their translation. I can only speculate on this matter, though.
