It sure feels good to pay less
Looking down the corridor of what once was the main hallway of the Whitehall Mall. From this perspective, Sears is behind us, and we would be looking straight down the hallway towards the Zollinger-Harned department store (later replaced by Leh's). The parking lot on our right stands where there used to be a line of stores. On the left side, we currently have Five Below, Lane Bryant, Bed Bath & Beyond, Payless Shoesource, Catherine's Plus Sizes, and a massage parlor (in order from closest to us to farthest away). Obviously the Payless is going out of business, but it seems like Catherine's and the massage place may be leaving soon too because the mall's leasing agency is advertising all three units at the end as available for lease. I dont know what many of these stores used to be, except I strongly suspect the Bed Bath & Beyond was where the Woolworth was located. This mall's Woolworth was pretty large by all accounts, and included its own eatery.
The row of big box stores you can see in the background was also formerly a mall hallway. As I said before, the anchor at this end was originally the Zollinger-Harned department store, which today is split between the Shoe Carnival, part of Gold's Gym, and part of Buy Buy Baby. Most of Buy Buy Baby, however, was originally a Weis Market. The Michael's and Men's Warehouse at the end are new constructions and did not exist before the mall was redeveloped into a mostly open air strip center.
Some sights around the Westgate Mall exterior. That pylon sign advertises Hallmark and Payless; Hallmark just closed down, and Payless will be joining it any day now. That ugly cube in the second picture used to be the mall's main entrance with "Westgate Mall" written overhead, but now it's just... well a blank cube hovering above some doors that take you to a blank wall. The Bon-Ton, newly renovated, sits abandoned. At the corner of the Bon-Ton department store, the word WESTGATE is mounted - a relic from the 1973 opening of this department store as "Hess's Westgate", an early location of the Hess's department store chain.
