You *can* count every row of a cross stitch, or you can just use the row above for reference, and if it a repeating pattern or a simple shape you just memorize the next several rows which really speeds things up. I used to do it as a *tiny* child (I refused to do it after age 6, got bored with it) and just picked it up again about a month ago.
Yeah, that’s mostly what I did, but with all the ascending/descending counts in the rings, it was still a trial. (”Which section am I on again? How far out does this one go?”) sometimes it was easier to just count every stitch because I’d lose track of which line I was on. But yeah, definitely a lot of relative counting.

One thing that can help is to use a contrasting color sewing thread to baste in a grid on your fabric before starting to match the 10 x 10 (or whatever) grid on your chart. Then you don't have to count so far and you have more frequent checks to see you are lined up right. Use long stitches and try not to split the marker thread (or use the solid nylon thread) and you can pull the grid out fairly easily
Oh, that’s clever! The diagram did have a grid on it, but I found it of limited use because the fabric didn’t. If I ever cross-stitch again I will definitely do that, great idea!
