Disney's new 'working' lightsaber prop looks pretty damn real

Disney's new 'working' lightsaber prop looks pretty damn real
Disney has unveiled a replica lightsaber that automatically extends and lights up from its core. To answer the question likely to be asked first: You can’t buy it right now. It isn’t clear whether or not the prop will ever be for sale. But you can see what it looks like in the video above, which is more or less like a working lightsaber, or as close to one as I’ve ever seen.
Maybe the video has been worked on to make the prop look extra good, but even so, it automatically extends and lights up brightly: two of the main things lightsabers do, along with cutting off hands and deflecting blaster fire. As Polygon (which spotted the teaser yesterday) points out, Star Wars fans have so far had to settle for retractable lightsabers that are lit from the bottom, or fully-lit sabers that look more like they do in the movies but don’t retract. This new model appears to have it all.
About the lightsaber, Disney says, “Yes, that’s a new type of lightsaber Rey is holding in her hand, created by Walt Disney Imagineering Research and Development,” but that’s about it. The prop will be used by actors at the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser experience at Walt Disney World in Florida, a two-night simulated spaceship stay opening in 2022. (“This isn’t storytelling—it’s storyliving.”)
How the lightsaber works isn’t known outside of Disney, but a 2018 patent provides the most likely explanation. The Disney patent describes a model lightsaber that operates by the same principle that allows a measuring tape to become rigid after unrolling.
The Verge explained the patent’s engineering last month, and the gif below from Disney and Star Wars fan Ben Ridout illustrates the idea well. (The model won’t literally use two measuring tapes, of course. The point is just that plastic strips can both be rolled up and become rigid by forming half-circles.)
Did #Disney invent a real working #lightsaber? Yes they did. It won’t melt through metal blast doors, or cut off your hand, but it does feature an illuminated blade that will extend and retract at the push of a button. This animation shows the concept behind the tech. pic.twitter.com/e7fwP06CxFApril 12, 2021

If the prop really looks as good as Disney’s video indicates, people are going to want it, so I suspect there’ll be a way to buy one—although maybe Disney will keep its patented lightsaber tech to itself for a few years to hype up the Florida experience.
The other question that remains is how sturdy the things will be. If all it does is nail the lightsaber look, that’d be really cool for fans and cosplayers, but it’d be far better if you could actually swing it around without the blade flopping over. Perhaps it isn’t promising that the actor in the teaser video stands completely still while holding the lightsaber, but it may not mean anything.

Naturally, players already extended the Resident Evil Village timed demo

Naturally, players already extended the Resident Evil Village timed demo
A 60-minute timed demo of Resident Evil Village has released on the PC, and as is almost always the case with timed demos on the PC, someone has already found a way to reset the demo timer and allow you to keep playing. The exploit alters files on your computer to trick the game timer into thinking you’ve played less than you have.
Posters on the Steam forums have shared the technique, a slightly involved process involving disabling the Steam Cloud and using the third party SAM tool.
This exploit follows Capcom taking down the demo servers on the PC yesterday after players figured out how to bypass a countdown timer to the demo’s launch.
Resident Evil Village is the eighth in the main series of the Capcom survival horror games, and has been hotly anticipated by many due to not just the popularity of the series, but the characters in it. Capcom has gone all-out in the media blitz before the game’s release on May 7th, up to and including a puppet show. For more about it, you can go see everything we know about Resident Evil Village.
You can find the Resident Evil Village gameplay demo on Steam.

Saints Row: The Third Remastered comes to Steam this month

Saints Row: The Third Remastered comes to Steam this month
Saints Row: The Third Remastered was released exclusively on the Epic store on May 22 last year. As is frequently the way of these things that means it’ll be coming to Steam on May 22 this year, a fact confirmed by the Saints Row Twitter account.
The remaster comes with all the DLC and has “enhanced visual effects, lighting and re-built character, vehicle and weapon models.” The original soundtrack is unchanged, since it was already perfect. While the remaster was created first and foremost for the sake of re-releasing Saints Row 3 on PS4 and Xbox One, having increased draw distances, improved environmental textures, and new character models does make it tempting to go back to Steelport.
It’s not exactly vital though, since the original version of Saints Row: The Third still looks pretty dang nice on PC. Saints Row 2 had a rougher PC port, and an official patch for it is in the works, with modder Mike ‘IdolNinja’ Watson (who was responsible for the Gentlemen of the Row mod) in the lead. Work has been slowed down, however, due to Watson developing cancer. You can follow his Twitter account for updates.

Scavengers ditching Twitch key drops, will be available to everyone May 1

Scavengers ditching Twitch key drops, will be available to everyone May 1
Free-to-play battle royale hybrid Scavengers had a bit of a rocky start in Early Access this week, due to issues with servers and Steam keys. Keys could only be claimed by watching streamers playing the game Twitch, and some viewers never got theirs. Also, Scavengers actually ran out of Steam keys to distribute. There were, as there often are with new games, some server crashing issues as well.
So a bit of a messy soft launch, but sounds like the server issues have been resolved, and even better, players won’t have to watch Twitch streams or keep checking their inboxes for a key. Scavengers enters Early Access properly tomorrow, May 1, and it’ll be available to everyone with no key needed to unlock it.
No keys needed – tomorrow, May 1, at 9AM PT / 5PM BST, Scavengers PC Early Access will be available for all.To celebrate, we’re also releasing a brand new deep-dive gameplay trailer on “What is Scavengers.” Share it with your friends as a quick primer!https://t.co/GRFHJTq1CFApril 30, 2021

It’s an abrupt change of plans—just yesterday the developers said they might “move off keyed access” at some point, but now it looks like they’ve committed to flinging open the doors. Starting Saturday at 9 am PT / 12 pm ET / 5 pm BST, Scavengers will be available to everyone. Fingers crossed the servers hold up.
If you haven’t played yet, or you have played but want some extra info on how it all works, there’s a new ‘gameplay deep dive’ video below. You can also check out our own Scavengers tips guide and our Scavengers crafting guide.

Wasteland 3 update will make the swearing parrot more sweary

Wasteland 3 update will make the swearing parrot more sweary
In the lead-up to Wasteland 3 expansion The Battle of Steeltown, due on June 3, InXile Entertainment is outlining its next free update, patch 1.4.0. Part of the focus is an upgrade of the animal companion system, and that means Polly the swearing parrot will get an even fouler mouth. Beak? Whatever.
Polly is getting a Demoralize ability to make use of those swears, and all your animal companions will now have a kennel to return to. If you dismiss them they’ll head back to the kennel, making it easier to recruit them again. Type limits are going away as well, meaning that instead of just having one of each animal you can have multiple goats, or cats, or chickens, with icons and health bars noting which of your party members has which pet incorporated in their character portraits.
On the subject of companions, bugs that meant human and robotic followers could sometimes vanish mid-game are finally being fixed, which is great. I realized Provost had gone missing deep into my own playthrough and didn’t want to reload an hours-old save just to bring him back.
Head over to InXile’s feature preview to hear the parrot in action. There’s a separate preview of the crafting system that’ll be part of patch 1.4.0 as well, letting you turn scrap into gear including new weapons like the W.A.S.P. gun, which is a gun that fires wasps instead of bullets. With that and my party full of cats, the wasteland will be even wilder when I return.
Here are the best Wasteland 3 character builds.

Registration's open for The Witcher game that's Pokémon Go with foglets

Registration's open for The Witcher game that's Pokémon Go with foglets
Is it a PC game? Given that you could play Pokémon Go on PC then we’re sure you’ll be able to emulate The Witcher: Monster Slayer, a spin-off that casts you as a witcher in a time long before Geralt and is basically Pokémon Go but with alghouls, barghests, and succubi. And it’s an excuse to tweet Tub Geralt again, so whatever. Don’t look at me like that.
Owners of Android phones can register for early access to the soft-launch version of The Witcher: Monster Slayer now, and at the end of April some will be selected to become witchers ahead of its global release. All you have to do is tell them your email and phone model, which seems a lot easier than having to go through all that business with the Law of Surprise.
Monster Slayer is an augmented reality game that turns the world around you into the Continent, filled with dangerous beasts you’ll have to fight. But not before you’ve cooked up the appropriate assortment of potions and oils, maybe some bombs, and then played a few rounds of Gwent with random shopkeepers. The bit with Gwent may not be included, but apparently the rest will, so maybe taking down a stone golem won’t be as easy as capturing another zubat after all.
Look, over there! It’s the best Witcher 3 mods.
