Caiden's background is a manifestation of his unique magic. The drawing is a bit out of context, but probably at this point in his life (not so much these days) he's still a bit nervous about his unique magic. Do you have any idea what kind of accidents a lack of portal control can cause? Yes, he calculated them (as much as his anxiety allowed him to)
