The clank of soda cans as Lapis pulled herself up from the floor. She’d been laying face-down in a pile of the evidence of last night’s partying. It was a party of one, as she still hadn’t been courageous enough yet to ask Pearl to stick around for her usual post-sundown shenanigans at home.
Hanging out all day was fine, and out on the town at night was too, but watching trash tv on the couch while downing carbonated waters that made her geology act up was just too intimate. The couch was for snuggling, and she just couldn’t ask Pearl to do that yet. And Pearl didn’t drink, so what was Lapis supposed to do? Work herself up into a drunken state while Pearl remained sober? Nah, man. Then Lapis might say or do something dumb.
It was much better keeping the two sides separate—her cool wild side with Pearl, and her dumb wild side home alone.
“Maybe if we were actually together, I wouldn’t wanna watch so much tv so it felt like someone was talking to me… like I wasn’t alone every night…”
Lapis didn’t mean it any sort of way. She’d only ever held hands with her past lover, and she only daydreamed about kissing in this sense that she was ever curious. When she said sleep together, she literally meant it. The presence of another person was the only way she could fall asleep.
Other than passing out.
“…Ugh.” Lapis dragged herself with mild stumbling to the fridge and reached for a water. This one, plain. No carbonation or special minerals. Just freshness flowing through her light.
Her gem glowed and Lapis summoned her wings, the action pulling all intoxicators from her body instantly, where they swirled in the water of her wings for second or two before she vanished them in a cloud of vapor.
Now stone-cold sober, Lapis downed the rest of her water and opened the freezer for a breakfast. She had done a grocery run last night, but that was before her buzz had even kicked in, so wouldn’t she have remembered buying ice cream?
“Huh?” Lapis pulled out the pink carton. It was decorated in hearts, likely for the upcoming holiday that she’d been hearing about. One of her housemates must have bought it for a treat.
“Hehe… finders keepers.” Lapis pulled a spoon from a drawer and plopped down on the counter to eat. She opened up the carton and dug into the ice cream. The spoon had just passed her lips when her eyes snapped wide open. She slowly swallowed the bite before putting the ice cream down.
“Oh man… Pearl.”
Lapis jumped up, her light-projected heart pounding. They hadn’t made plans to hang today, but Pearl wouldn’t mind if she dropped by, right? Lapis just had to see her, though she couldn’t explain why. Or what’d she say when she did.
“Pearl!”
Lapis took a running jump out of the living room window, where she free-fell through the air for a moment before summoning her wings. The water in them was crystal clear. Yep, she was sober all right. So, how to explain the way thoughts of Pearl made her suddenly so dizzy?
