Eastern Wood Peewee The only time I’ve had one in my backyard.

Australia’s wildlife is amazing. Especially our birdlife. We’ve got some of the most vocally beautiful songbirds in the world. We’ve also got a shit-tonne of birds in the parrot family, and a lot of flock birds.

Imagine, if you will, waking up somewhere before 5am to an uncoordinated assembly of the following birds, hanging out in the park across the road, screaming at the sun:

Sulfur Crested Cockatoos - we get a handful, the little birds harp at them and move them on, though, to much indignant screeching.

Kookaburras - again, the most I’ve seen in a group is six, but when it’s just one outside your window, it’s enough!

Corellas - there is a large flock / several small flocks in this area. They are chatty mofos and when they really get going you can be forgiven for assuming the end of days is nigh. Turn this video up to uncomfortably loud for an authentic experience.

Crows. Australian crows don’t ‘caw’, they ‘aaAAUUUGHHHH’. Observe:

We also have a lot of magpies singing in the day, which is lovely; noisy miners, which are noisy but like NOTHING in comparison to the parrots; various other small parrot families, and a huge flock of honking sacred ibises. I couldn’t find any videos of a large group of gently honking ibis, so imagine a bunch of subdued geese honks.

Oh, there’s also a resident brush turkey (although I only learned it was ‘brush’ not ‘bush’ today; everyone calls them bush turkeys) who has been whooping on the regular for a couple of years, but I think he got lucky this year because for a few days there was a slightly higher-pitched whooping joining in. Like, literally, their call is whoooop whoop whoop whoop etc..
