Why Green Gables Fables Gilbert Blythe Should Become a Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon
Dear GGF Executive Team (officialggf (especially Marie ( harmlesstea), Mandy (mandylovespineapple), Alicia (neverthesamegirl), and Tanner (pelmora)),
As you know in Green Gables Fables, it is cannon that Gilbert Blythe wants to become a cardiac surgeon. I believe that it should be cannon that Gilbert wants to become a pediatric cardiac surgeon because he wants to help people who come after him, he likes interacting with kids, and he knows how to deal with them.
In chapter 7 (”The Pointing of Duty”) in Anne of Avonlea, Anne and Gilbert discuss how they are getting on as teachers in their respective schools before delving into their dreams of the future. It is during this latter discussion that Gilbert reveals to Anne that he’s decided to become a doctor. One of the reasons why he’s chosen this profession is because of this explanation: “the folks who lived before me have done so much for me that I want to show my gratitude by doing something for the folks who will live after me.” (Emphasis mine.) From what I understand, in being a cardiac surgeon, Gilbert would take care of people of all ages but especially the elderly and the children. However, by having Gilbert say in Anne of Avonlea that he wants to do “something for the folks who will live after me,” in the modern context, those folks who will live after him is the next generation (and those after that); these are the children, the promise of the future. Gilbert, as we know - whether it’s book-Gilbert or GGF-universe Gilbert - wants to help people. It is in this capacity as a Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon that Gilbert can save children’s lives; he can help children whom 100 or even about 30 years ago would have died due to the lack of medical technology and/or knowledge that we have nowadays, would enable these children to survive and at least quite possibly, be able to have normal, full lives that wouldn’t ordinarily have.
In that same chapter of Anne of Avonlea that I mentioned above, between the lines, we get an understanding that Gilbert likes interacting with kids. It is in that chapter that he says,
“‘I like teaching too. […] It’s good training for one thing. Why, Anne, I’ve learned more in the weeks I’ve been teaching the young ideas of White Sands than I learned in all the years I went to school myself. We all seem to be getting on pretty well. […] I think White Sands is tolerably satisfied with your humble servant.”
Personally, I could see Gilbert becoming a tutor during university (college for us Americans), during which time he tutors either fellow university students in math and/or science, or tutoring lower-income students to help them achieve their best potential and (hopefully) end up going to university. Additionally, later when Gilbert is a doctor in the town of Glen St. Mary, he would have to interact with and take care of people of all ages and I could see him enjoying his interactions with kids and doing his best to take care of them.
Furthermore, not only does he have teaching experience and taking care of people of all ages - probably not just at the hospital as a medical student but also as the Glen St. Mary doctor - but he gains first-hand experience in dealing with children as a father to six (out of seven) surviving children. It is through this first-hand experience that he sees how his own children grow both mentally and physically on a daily basis. He’s the one who gets to greet them at the end of each day, love them, provide for them, answer their incessant questions, possibly help take care of them (in some small ways), and perhaps potentially help them with their homework.
It should become cannon that Gilbert Blythe in the Green Gables Fables-universe should want to be a Pediatric Cardiac Surgeon, not just a Cardiac Surgeon. Firstly, Gilbert wants to help people and as he says in Anne of Avonlea, “the folks who lived before me have done so much for me that I want to show my gratitude by doing something for the folks who will live after me.” In the modern context, “the folks who will live after me” are the children who will come in the future generations after Gilbert; this is the modern equivalent of him giving back to society through medicine. Secondly, we get a sense in Anne of Avonlea and in his later years as a doctor, that he likes interacting with kids. Moreover, later when he becomes a father, he gains first-hand experience and insight in dealing with children that furthers his understanding of kids that he didn’t have when he was just a teacher or a medical student/doctor taking care of people of all ages.
Hi so I have a question box now feel free to ask me anything that's all key love u bye
"Why Can't You Speak in Plain English?"
I want to thank Tanner for his initial audition video for the inspiration of this drabble. pelmora, this is for you.
(P.S. - This is un-beta-ed.)

After Davy completed a violent coughing fit, Gilbert asked him, "Do you have angina? - "
"Huh?"
"Chest pain."
"Uh-uh," Davy shook his head no. "Why can't you speak in plain English?"
"Davy, trying to get Gil not to use medical terms is like trying to not let summer give way into autumn."
Someone PLEASE make this happen!
Gilbert/Tanner/ pelmora needs to have an uber-dork contest against Benedick/Jake/ awkward-manatea I know being on opposite sides of the planet makes it a challenge, but seriously. Maybe over Skype? My world would be made that much more awesome. Do it for the fans! Please?
