TTRPG Monstober 2020 - Day 13: Vampire
Name: Chon Chon + Penanggalen
Alternate Names: Chonchon, Penanggalan, Penanggal
Mythology: Mapuche Mythology (Chon Chon) and Southeast Asian/Indonesian Folklore (Penanggalen)
Size: Small, both are the size of a human head.
Environment: Forests, Jungles, Urban, out in the night sky
In Mythika: Chon Chon are macabre heads that grew bat-like wings so they can fly, their wings are grown from their ears. You never encounter a Chon Chon alone, they always hunt in great swarms, attacking a target from all sides and like a vampire bat drain the victim of its blood with their bite attacks. Chon Chon are said to be created from the damned heads of sinners by powerful Warlocks and Witches, but it may also be the result of a great curse. Chon Chon victims are drained of their blood and afterwards their head will grow its wings and join the swarm, so with every human victims the swarm becomes bigger, the curse only affects humans. Some legends speak of giant Chon Chon, created from the head of a Cyclops.
While Chon Chon are almost mindless forces of hunger and terror, the more powerful related Penanggalen are intelligent and cunning flying heads that want to find themselves a new body, but their horrid curse keeps them from finding a lasting one. Penanggalen look like Chon Chon, but from their cut-off necks horrid tentacles grow, giving them the looks of head-like jellyfish. These horrors use their tentacles to decapitate human victims and then put the tentacles inside the hole to become the new head of the victim. This new body however will rot at an increased rate and the Penanggalen only can control it for a couple of days before it rots away into nothingness, and they need to find themselves a new body again. A Penanggalen’s envy for living humans is great and they attack with much hate and anger, strangling their victims with their tentacles and finally decapitating them with the two blade-like tentacles they possess. These creatures are often confused for Aswang, which have similar abilities to split from their head and limbs. Penanggalen are vampires that drink the blood of their victims through a hollow tongue.
