“  oh,  hey.   c’mon pep,  just breathe with me,  okay?  ”    when this had first begun months ago,  tony had been mortified the first time she had started to cry on him,  slightly out of touch with the concept of comforting as a whole.   now,  though,  he’s a little more used to it,  and his voice isn’t even tinged with panic when he speaks.   hands come up to cradle her face gently,  thumbs deftly catching her tears and swiping them away gently.    “  just look at me,  pep.   my face is like,  a cure - all for emotional upset,  just look at it.   c’mon,  just breathe,  you’ve got it.  ”

“   okay,  yeah,  so,  i have something to tell you.   ”    gaze drifts restlessly,  anywhere but her face before it finds home on the wall just to the left of pepper’s head.   he doesn’t want to tell her this   --   he’s not told anyone else,  not even rhodey,  but after ruminating on the subject for a day or two,  he’s come to the conclusion that pepper,  if no one else,  deserves to know.   the words,  when they come,  are flippant,  as if discussing the weather rather than his imminent death.    “   so,  this thing is killing me.   as in,  i’m dying as we speak,  probably only have a few weeks left.   ”
