“She’s not big on like horror stuff, right? Kind of a pussy. She almost died going to Horror Nights at Universal Studios one year, and like she just doesn’t fuck with horror movies. I love horror movies and haunted houses and shit, though? So like, write me into a fucking slasher verse? Some Resident Evil level shit? Some ‘I just moved into a house that’s been haunted by spirits who are killing people, now how do I get the fuck out’ storyline? Zombie apocalypse? The last one, she’d actually be chill with, but. I’m so down, sign me the fuck up, I’m living.”

what makes a house a home ?

“what makes a house a home?” a chuckle escapes nic’s lips as they turn upward. “are you expecting a cheesy answer? because you know i can lay the cheese down.” the blonde takes a minute and taps her fingers on the table, focusing on the different drumming patterns because...well, she doesn’t really know how to answer it.  actually, she does know, she just doesn’t want to say it outloud. as if telling gabe--best friend gabe--is going to make this nebulous idea real and real things can be taken away. they were once before, what makes now so different? 

but it is also gabe perea, her best friend--quite literally her saving grace. when she lost the two most important people in her life in one fell swoop? someone how the universe had given her three in one person. without him, she wonders if she’d be as functional as she is right now. maybe--she was a strong person, but you’re only as strong as the people who support you. everyone needs someone like that.  “i guess--well, i do. i make it a home because i choose to call it that.” her smile falls from a grin to a soft smirk, one that is more pensive and less guarded. “a home is where you should feel like your full, true self. that no matter the mistakes you make, the issues with yourself, the struggles you have--its all welcome in that place. it should be filled with love and grace and appreciation for who you are--not always what you did or who you can become. the best homes are the ones where not only you are there to do that for yourself, but others are there to support and encourage you too. but its gotta start with you and your own self love.” she bites her lip and casts her eyes downward. what she said is true--but what does she actually feel right now?

“it doesnt feel much like home right now, up there. its lonely and sad and the entire place feels...stuffy, like its not my place. and don’t get me wrong, finn is a great roommate. but,” she takes a breathe to stifle the potential of tears. it wasn’t a thing she did in public. cops lose their cred when the tears start to fall, its a fact of the patriarchial society they live in. “y’know the reason i got allicin? so that the space in my bed stopped feeling like a chasm that was gonna swallow me up. ten years of sleeping, eating--living--next to the same person and suddenly its all over. how is a home ever going to recover if half of its gone? they say home is where the heart is and i hate that saying because its true and i desperately don’t want it to be.”

“She’s got a lot more reservations about love and relationships than I do, and I’m the one that’s already been through a divorce.  I try to tell her to not overthink and worry about things so much, but I don’t think it’s working.”
