That post-game depression hits hard
sheesh...I should never open jokes from my friend while drinking coffee. This one was particularly juicy ;P
Everything She Was Trained For
... okay...
After several days of wondering what was happening with GAME OF THRONES Maise’s quote about killing the Night King gave me something to riff of of.
This is all supposition and relying on the hope that everything will wrap up neatly.
HOW WOULD GAME OF THRONES END IF EVERYONE DID THE JOB THEY WERE TAUGHT TO DO This is a short list because not all the characters have arcs that made it to the show.
ARYRA STARK - Arya’s first scene was shooting an arrow at a target Bran was aiming for. From episode one her goal was to be a fighter, not a lady. She didn’t want to marry for politics, she wanted to fight. She wanted revenge. She wanted to protect her family and her people.
We see this coming full circle. She’s in a relationship for love (and it’s the only one she’s been in). She protecting her family and Winterfell. She stole Bran’s kill, again. She faced Death. She destroyed Death.
Her endgame is to continue protecting the people from all threats.
JON SNOW - This one is a little harder because, well, his path is a little more complicated than Arya’s. Arya spent her entire life focusing on training. Jon has done a little bit of everything, he’s been a fighter, a leader, a negotiator, a politician, judge and jury at times... but at the core of all of that is a desire for family and his complicated relationship with the Starks. He desperately wanted to be the legitimate son of someone. He wanted the family and he gave it up to join the Night Watch because he was told he could never have a family.
In the last season we’ve seen Jon realize that not only could have love, but that he has a living family (his aunt) and he is the legitimate son of a king. He’s been handed these things and this knowledge and hasn’t really used them yet. We’re not even sure if he’s told the Starks yet.
Jon’s perfect endgame is having a family and being a Lord (or king) like Ned Stark.
BRAN STARK - Bran was always the curious one. His curiosity led him to becoming the Three-Eyed Raven and that’s his endgame. He is going to be an adviser and the Three-Eyed Raven, nothing less or more.
SANSA STARK - Sansa started with one goal - the one given to her by her parents and culture - and that was to marry the prince, have children, and just kinda exist on the side of things because that’s what she was told she was good for. She didn’t rebel against this like Arya did, and she accepted it, which made a lot of people unhappy. No, I have not forgiven you for disliking her. Moving on...
... what Sansa got was a lot of tragedy. She quickly realized that if she married it would be loveless and abusive. She learned from Cersei how miserable being a political child bride was. She survived the slaughter of her family, abuse, and being a hostage. She survived being sold. She survived quite a lot all while learning politics and intrigue with the best politicians in Westeros’s very messed up culture.
The way to closer her arc is for her to put her political acumen to work (which we see happening after the Starks re-take Winterfell) and to have the relationship she wanted. Which means marrying someone for love NOT because she is key to the North and that person wants to control Winterfell. Which sounds nearly impossible right now because the number of available men in Westeros is rapidly dwindling and the number that are the right age for Sansa is 2 named characters (Jon or Gendry) both who are in other relationships.
Sansa’s perfect endgame is a love match and life as a ruler, whether it be Queen or Lady, Sansa is the best politician in Westeros right now.
DAENERYS TARGARYEN - Dany’s arc, like Jon’s is a little more complicated because she didn’t stick to one thing ever. Her original dream was to return home. Just Home, not to the throne (that came later) and her training has been hard to spot.
Dany’s first teacher was her brother... there she learned the importance of her name, cruelty, and that she was expected to obey.
Then Dany fell under the tutelage of Khal Drogo who taught her violence for her enemies, how to obey and be obeyed, and that she was the most important person in the world.
Then she got her dragons and season by season the conquest of nations. Her teachers were Jorah (who taught her unconditional love, trust, and some politics), Missandei (loyalty, faith, and again that Dany is the most important person), and then Tyrion (politics and ego) and Varys (politics and dissembling).
With all these lessons the main take away is Daenerys Is Important. Because of her family name. Because of her dragons. This is has been reinforced again, and again, and again. But the lesson of “You Are Better Than Everyone” is in direct conflict to the themes of the books which push for equality and respect. Still...
Dany’s perfect endgame is for her to take the throne alone, to rule as the Queen of Everything and be adored. That’s what she was taught to do.
BRIENNE OF TARTH - Brienne was mocked for being too tall and not beautiful enough. She was told women couldn’t be knights because of tradition. The completion of her arc is being loved for her beauty (Tormund) and being a knight (Jaime knighted her). All that’s left is for her to continue leading like the boss she is.
The most poetic ending for Episode IX
Okay, here’s my take on how the ending for Episode IX should work not only in terms of character but in terms of poetic story/cinema as well. Here we go:
Assuming Reylo is Endgame (and let’s be honest it definitely is at this point), we can imagine Rey and Kylo going off together, or being exiled, to some planet. Could be one we know or one we haven’t seen but Naboo pops into my mind as a perfect place to go. They decide to take the Falcon and Rey heads on board first, but Kylo stops right before walking up the ramp. He’s completely frozen stiff, having flashbacks of when Rey left him and took the Falcon or when his father would disappear for long periods of time on the same ship. It hurts him to get back into the ship again.
Rey notices this and walks back down the ramp, stopping in front of Kylo and offering her hand to him once again (as she did on Ahch-to) and Kylo is at first hesitant to take it, being a complete opposite of when he offered his own hand to Rey in the throne room where he was assertive not hesitant. Eventually he takes it and Rey smiles at him and pulls him on board.
They enter the cockpit and Kylo again is hesitant, having good and bad memories of this place flooding him all at once. He sees Rey take something out of her pocket and hang it up on a hook from the ceiling; it’s the gold dice. Curious as to where she got it he asks, “Where did you get that?” She answers, “I found it on Ahch-to when I went back there. Why?” Kylo smiles a little, reminiscing, “Oh, nothing. It’s just good to see them again.”
Rey shrugs it off and takes her place in the co-pilots seat. Kylo is confused as to why she isn’t in the pilots seat and she gives him a look and gestures at the chair for him to sit down. Kylo runs his hand over the edge of the chair, not quite sure if he’s worthy enough to take up his father’s place. To be the captain of the ship that meant so much to Han. When Kylo was a boy, Han promised that the Falcon would become his when he was old enough, and now that it’s come true he nearly cries. He sighs and eventually slowly lowers himself down into it, feeling his father’s presence just by sitting in that spot. He exhales and starts prepping the ship for take off.
They reach the atmosphere and head into hyperspace. They land the ship on some planet (Naboo would be great), and they exit it together, watching a sunrise (not a sunset because their story is just beginning, not ending), and without looking, Rey moves her hand into Kylo’s and they intertwine fingers, leaning into one another, hoping their future together will be a peaceful one now that they’ve brought balance to the Force.

Small Story
I started listening to the Deftones in my second year of middle school because the girl I was into at the time, a girl that has forever fucked over my life, was along with a few other bands was listening to this band. Deftones was the ice breaker that lead to some of the worst years of my life, with someone I wish was dead more than almost anyone else. Today was like a celebration of being over all of that haunting and sour notes from rotting relationships and to know where I am right now, right this very moment is one of the best times of my life and I owe it all to some amazing friends and a beautiful girl I am constantly blessed with knowing as my bestfriend and lover. The past is the past, it is dead and gone and memories still remain but I’m not haunted anymore.
Into the sunset.
Hollywood Babylon, Bloodlust, Fan Fiction (and Hollywood Babylon again because I love the way the set is removed to reveal another sunset).
