Often tracks are paired in a way that tells a story. I think Liam may have explained this about the “First Time” EP, that the tracks together form a unifying concept about the EP. Taken together, the songs acquire contextual meaning.
Perfect had already been released as a single, as had Drag Me Down. The DMD video had been released. The Perfect mv was released the day of the EP (October 20, 2015).
The tracks on the Perfect EP were: 1. Perfect (stripped) 2. Home3. Perfect (Matoma remix)4. Drag Me Down (Big Payne x AFTERHRS remix)
Home is the only track not previously released, and also not included on any edition of Made in the AM.
There were many, many articles suggesting that Perfect was about Haylor, and was Harry’s response to Taylor’s song, Style. There was a fan mash-up that showed the two songs matched in key (D major), tempo, structure, and could be overlaid on top of each other.
What’s funny is that this is the only song Louis and Harry wrote together, about Harry’s most famous public relationship. Harry himself called it an “ironic” love song. It’s ironic because it satirizes the tropes in Taylor Swift’s songs and public romances: the obvious camping in hotel rooms (and Ben Winston’s attic), the midnight drives, cameras flashing, breakup songs.
So, Harry was asked over and over, is it about Taylor? Are you heartbroken?
In retrospect, it was about Haylor, in a way. One Direction got the headlines and the free promo. They might’ve even cleared it with Taylor’s team.
To pair it with Home, a word weighted with meaning in the fandom, places Perfect in this context. Home is on the tattoos, in the bears’ Twitter, tweeted by Louis. It solidifies the Larry head canons. It told us what we needed to know about Perfect.
I don’t think we talk enough about the fact that Home is a song that’s included in the Perfect EP, which is a single that was written by Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson. Just let that settle in for a second and then cry with me…
