elle’s ✨slutty 18thc perfume list✨

this is the result of years of combining two very specific special interests, so if you’re here: welcome to the rabbit hole. idek how i got here myself.

general scents that scream debauchery:

histoires de parfums — 1740 (bergamot, mugwort, patchouli, coriander, cardamom, cedar, birch, labdanum, leather, vanilla, elemi, helichrysum):

(sigh) yeah, this one again. my reigning champion of slutty 18thc perfumes — to the point where i wouldn’t blame you for groaning every time i bring it up. it’s inspired by the marquis de sade and, i mean… you really can’t out-slutty that. on me it comes off slightly boozy even though there are literally zero boozy notes?? witchcraft. it’s leathery without being sweaty, spicy without being edible, elegant without behaving itself.

état libre d’orange — attaquer le soleil, marquis de sade (bergamot, cistus, tuberose, jasmine, leather, cedarwood, amber, musk):

speaking of de sade: i haven’t smelled this one in a while, but i remember a very musky (not the cuddly musk, but the “oh, this is a creature” musk) tuberose with puffs of incense. some reviewer once declared it smelling like sweaty balls and that has branded itself into my brain. it did not smell like sweaty balls on me (thankfully), but that’s about as far as my confidence goes.

alkemia — le caveau des innocents (tabac, dark coffee, cloves, rum-soaked pears, candied citron, caramel, star anise, opoponax, labdanum, hashish, benzoin, vanilla incense, guaiac wood):

tragically, my skin loves coffee notes and i…don’t. devastating, because the rest of this is just lavish, sticky, spiced decadence. it smells like dessert and sinning.

while writing this down i realised two scents i planned to include have been discontinued. rip baroque and quintessence of debauchery. the list is now significantly smaller :(

now for what i lovingly call the wig fucker segment:

(do you ever just stop mid-hobby and ask yourself what exactly you’re doing with your life? because, yeah. 😭)

these all smell vaguely related, so why i insisted on trying every single one is between me and my intrusive thoughts.

arquiste — venice rococo (black violet, rose, chamomile, dusty iris, subtle animalic amber):

this is the baseline powdered-wig scent, imo. elegant, powdery without choking you, a little soapy, a little floral.

miskeo — portrait de madame et son chat (fur, musc, vanilla, corn chips, orris, ambergris):

this one feels the most lived in, thanks to the musk and fur notes, it’s less airy powdered wig and more “you’ve been at this soirée for hours and someone has definitely kissed your neck in a hallway.” cosy, slightly animalic, and quietly sexy. and before you ask: no, i can’t find the corn chip note.

dark tales — powdered peruke (vintage powder, white rose, iris petals, vegan musk, creamy vanilla, ambrette, hay, woods, cashmere):

this is the gentler sibling of the wig-perfume family. less aggressive puff of powder to the face, more soft-focus candlelit boudoir. the woody notes smooth it out beautifully. i’ve only tried the oil version (which i don’t think is available anymore?) so the edp might hit differently.

phil & philly — boudoir belle (hawthorn, aldehydes, rose, ylang-ylang, benzoin, musk, vanilla):

similar to venice rococo but LOUD. the aldehydes take the mic and don’t shut up. it’s pretty, but it will punch you in the forehead if you overspray. ask me how i know.

bonus fragrance i barely remember but belongs here emotionally:

pulp fragrance — moon dust (pink powder puff, orchids, angora cardigans, blonde tobacco, oakmoss, blushing vanilla, vintage nitro musk):

from what i remember: very on-theme, very soft-focus. it’s oil-based, so the sillage is smaller which honestly works in its favour, because this genre gets overwhelming fast.

a half-arsed historical note: people in the actual 18th century smelled way more straightforward (lots of florals, musks, citruses, herbs, and whatever you could stuff into oils or pomanders). leather, for example, is a modern fantasy accord rather than something they could’ve replicated as a note back then. but we’re here for the love of the game, and i’ll always choose a good atmospheric perfume over strict realism. also, i hope no one read a post about my opinions on slutty perfume and expected historical accuracy or anything.

The problem with things being described as smelling/tasting of orchid is it could technically refer to a full bodied floral, something spicy and very powdery, absolutely nothing, or literal rotting carcass

Perfumes that remind me of the muppets

Kermit the frog

Him and miss piggy did get perfume releases but they are unavailable unfortunately, his was called amphibia and was a men’s citrus aquatic scent

Steamed rainbow by ds and Durga comes to mind immediately when I think of Kermit, besides the name that nostalgic scent of playing in the sprinkler is something I associate with the frog. Simple aquatic and green despite the chaos of the notes list

Dragonfly by zoologist this is a much more dreamy and serene, it’s much more the ideal of a clear lake but I think that sense of wonder works well for Kermit as a character. A peaceful still pond

Honorable mentions to wet garden by Demeter (earthworm and dirt too) and lilyphea by diptyque they are spring in a bottle- wet earth, dew and water though at two drastically different price points

Miss piggy

In 1998, she got her own perfume called moi and it was a floral with blonde woods but there’s so much that this diva would wear. She’d have a massive expensive collection because she is that girl!

Faux rose by a company of the same name gives off the experience of a beautiful lady’s equally gorgeous vanity backstage, it’s sweet and wonderfully full bodied from the honeycomb and cake within with the makeup powders softening it together with the rose, makes sense for a company with Westwood

Rose adage from Odette parfum is just a no brainer though some might say that moulin rose might work better for miss piggy, personally i like seeing her vulnerability that she shares rather than her just playing the vamp but I think it works for both sides of her. The lovesick sweetie and the tough performer

(Imperia) La divina by Marissa Zappas gives you 80’s boudoir energy, soft musky rose with a bite to it. It captures the essence of a woman who became one of the first celebrities as we know them.

Portrait of a lady by Frederic Malle is maximum drama, like any good soap opera. Velvety incense lines the whole thing in a mysterious sexy air, and while miss piggy might not be mysterious shes an icon of our prime smoking areas too.

Ingenue by puppet parfum is another rose scent but miss piggy and the romance of a rose will always go hand and hand. This one might be more of an Annie sue fragrance than a piggy one but this is how miss piggy wants to be portrayed at first, coy and delicate, I’d also lump in delina for a more mainstream version of this fantasy, less makeup and powder more floral and straightforward

For my non rose girlies I do think that faux by alloy studios would be another perfect miss piggy core scent. Peach and fur coats, glamour in the most divine diva way

Gonzo the great

100% magic by puppet parfumes (ironic I know) with its sparkler like quality that hits your nose is just so perfect for gonzo, the spun sugar note is warm but light and airy. Gonzo gives off big carnival vibes to me as well

Meteorite by Syd botanica is Avant garde and otherworldly in the way only gonzo can be. Even if you don’t believe him to be an alien, they are still a shooting star out of that cannon

Last birthday cake created by toskovat can both be melancholy but also bombastic which to me fits gonzo to a tee, a celebration with sweet desserts and explosions

If we were talking Christmas carol narrator gonzo I’d go with things we never shared by the same company. Gonzo is honestly a niche scent frenzy I didn’t even include solar wind by pictura or ribbon dance by syd botantica, he’s just a complex whatever you know?

Scooter

To me, scooter is the one who most would smell like the theater itself, his status of being a nepotism hire along with the flashy satin jacket he wears is what mostly led me to these choices. Though in all of that razzle dazzle, he’s still a rowdy teen in the og show, bouncing off the walls with a subtle energy all his own

Les chaussons rouge by both pearfat and Odette is the feeling to me of a dusty old theatre being brought into technicolor which is how I felt about the show after scooter’s formal introduction. It’s bright and spicy and alive in a space that has history and tradition. To me it’s the perfect base scent for him

I’ll never learn by pearfat parfum is the scent I used to capture scooter’s immaturity, because while yes he’s dressed in nice fabrics like the suede note in here, he is at the end of the day a sheltered rich kid who schemes too much

Maggie the cat is alive! Im alive! By Marissa Zappas, is like running your hands through a silky soft and expensive blanket, like zippy fruit pits and champagne, some reviews likened it to a top end salon which to me fits the glamour of show business as well as the general upkeep of a pampered rich puppet

R+b by zernell gille to me is scooter when he’s just himself, no plans or guilt tripping or lying just a enthusiastically, energetic force. Not too tart not too sweet. It’s fruity and zesty (haha) and joyful.

If you wanted a scent based on his time as a movie usher or just any of the times he sells popcorn which is a lot -I think that creepshow from xyrena perfectly captures that movie theater environment

Fozzie bear

Foz is tricky but he reminds me of an overly loved stuffed animal and those are some of the vibes I want to capture with these

Warm bulb by clue has this burning dust quality while also being comforting and familiar that Fozzie has in spades, his act may be a disaster but it’s a reliable one

Nanatopia by born to stand out was a no brainer for me due to Fozzie’s classic banana jokes but also because banana bread is peak fozzie-core to me. Warm spices and not fancy in the least. I’d also put l’explicite by house of oud in this category but it’s not committing as hard as btso

Thumbsucker from stora skuggan has a vintage air to it with the almond and violet making it powdery but more than anything this is a perfume thats about being sick in bed, cherry syrup and honey. On that note I think that honey body by syd botantica gives you a more outside summer rain version of this feeling of being cuddled with pollen and honey in the air

Just saw your comment about Krishna liking Aquatic scents, and I love that!!! Personally I also like aquatic scents with grapefruit and patchouli notes, it's perfect for a humid country like India. But yes Jasmine is a classic, probably the scent that defines India.

And if it's not too intrusive, I once saw your comment about suddenly being satisfied with food and interest in perfumes, this happened with me too after spending a lot of time thinking about Vishnu/Krishna and Lakshmi for about 3 or 4 yrs. I find it so surreal that some devotees have such similar experiences, specially the food thing. I have also noticed that once I started a little far from him, that appetite kind of returned maybe it's me being delusional idk.

I think Lakshmi wud prefer lotusy and super floral scents.

I also have a feeling Narayan likes scents related to the Moon, or the Night.

Maybe milk?? Milky scents?? He resides in the Ocean of Milk? So He smells that daily? I am not sure.

Now that I am thinking, I am probably projecting because I like aquatic or fresh scents.

Yes, this sudden interest in perfumes was quite unexpected.

The satisfaction with food, it does exist, and also u suddenly begin to eat more healthier, and more satisfying ones.

A feeling of happily being full, rather than just being full.

But yeah, its nice to see devotees sharing similar behavior once u enter Shri and her Man's company.
