Folks, we’ve had an exciting seven weeks of baseball and I am here to say there is still time yet. We may have another seven before a winner is decided. That means immense joy for this baseball fan and more SPAM in your email folders! If you think about it, we are almost 1/4 of the way through the season. HOT DAMN!
We went a different route with the post today. Apologies about the length. If it’s too long for you, just think about how long it took me to write. Do us all a favor and settle in, click some links, and start your week off right.
The following is a current ranking of all 30 MLB teams (yes, I included the Indians) based on their performance in The Runs Challenge 2k15. If you have a problem with any of the below rankings...get over it. It’s a game. Please note, these rankings have pretty much nothing to do with standings, overall record, or my opinion. For this ranking, it’s all about the runs.
1. The Arizona Diamondbacks (Matty). Needs 10. I remember sitting in the study watching this all play out. I bet Matt watches this every morning when he wakes up and says to himself, “Today. Today will be the day.”
2. The Washington Nationals (Garrison). Needs 12. Bryce Harper is playing like Denard Span if Denard Span was a mixture of Joe Di Maggio and Ken Griffey Jr. The Nats are scary. They are doing all this with average to bad pitching from all their starters except Million Dollar Max Baby AND no help from an injured and creepy pedophile looking, Anthony Rendon (111 runs last year). Did you miss the part where Bryce Harper is a hybrid of Denard Di Griffey?
3. The Kansas City Rumblin’ Royals (Ms. Hansen). Needs 13. The Royals haven’t closed out a runs category in the month of May. But when you start out as hot as the Royals bats did you don’t really fall out of the top 6. NOT TO MENTION HAVING a +65 RUN DIFFERENTIAL! I always have bad things to say about the Royals, but I won’t this time.
4. The Toronto Blue Jays (Vito). Needs 0 and 9. Vito, I’m going to apologize upfront about this. It seems like almost every video I find for this post has the Yankees getting the short end of the stick. It’s not you, it’s just the Yankees. In order to make it up to you, I give you this. Da Fuq? Look at all them runs? Get ‘em boyssss. Here’s a mock headline I read pretty much every day..."[Enter any Blue Jay players’ name]’s 2-homer game not enough to edge [enter any team the northmen play]”.
5. The Detroit Tigers (Brewer). Needs 0 and 12. The Tigers aren’t playing the best baseball right now. The one good thing is the wild dogs are still killing it on Instagram. Maybe Anibal should worry less about his gram game and worry more about letting 1,000,000 runs in this year.
6. The Atlanta Braves (Blake). Needs 11 and 13. What? Who? Mike Jones! Who? Mike Jones! Seriously, these Braves were flirting with last place territory in the first couple weeks and they blew up on the scene like it was 2005 all over again. Somebody call 281-330-8004.
7. The St. Louis Cardinals (CP Drizzle). Needs 12 and 13. The Cardinals have the 2nd highest run differential in the league right now in addition to being the 2nd best team. All of this is good news if you are a Cardinals fan, but as previously touched upon...no one likes the Cardinals. Not one single person.
8. The Milwaukee Brewers (Cooper). Needs 9 and 13. Shhheeeiittttt! I see you Brewers! Now, for a long time I didn’t see you, because you were terrible. Now, you’re only the second worst team in the majors and the bats are finally coming alive.
9. The Houston ‘Stros (L.boogie). Needs 12 and 13. You all know how I feel about the ‘Stros. They certainly are a Cinderella story in the AL West (which is having trouble even keeping up on .500 ball), but the thing about this story, Cinderella, is we won’t make it to the end. We might not even make it to the ball. So it looks like you may be shit out of luck.
10. The Minnesota Twinkies (Mary). Needs 10 and 11. I’m not even going to waste my breath and say the Twinkies are a scary contender for the AL Central this year because I know this team is held together with a bunch of over-achieving youngsters, Joe Mauer’s laundry money, and the sticky flap of Torii Hunter’s used Depend.
11. The Cleveland Indians (Sary). Needs 11 and 12. The only thing more annoying than the Twinkies being in the top 10 is the stupid Indians even being on this list. Viva el vaquero.
12. The Oakland Athletics (BDD). Needs 11 and 13. The A’s haven’t closed a runs category in the month of May. That’s correct. It has been 29 days. Have you seen how terrible this A’s team is playing? They are soooo far out of their division race they might as well just stop playing. 29 DAYS?
13. The Tamp Bay Rays (Ben). Needs 10 and 13. Yawn. The Rays are first in the AL East. Good for them.
14. The San Francisco Giants (Cameron). Needs 7, 12, and 13. I wish The Giants never closed all those runs categories last week. False hope in a false spring. And there was wood every where in that damn forest to knock on.
15. The New York Yankees (Tommy). Needs 7, 10, and 12. Sorry, I had to. The Yankees are, from what I hear, what we thought they were.
16. The Colorado Rockies (Dettman). Needs 9, 12, and 13. Dettman is a sister kisser. I just want to make that clear. But he’s also my friend. None of this has to do with baseball or The Rockies. Like I said, I just want to make that clear.
17. The San Diego Padres (Ajah). Needs 9, 12, and 13. I thought I was done with these rankings and I scrolled up and realized I left 17-19 blank because how can you really define and talk about mediocrity? At least The Daddies play baseball in paradise. There is NOTHING mediocre about paradise.
18. The Los Angeles Dodgers (Ricky). Needs 10, 12, and 13. I didn’t do the Padres justice. Seriously, just watch this. Oh? Brought your mitt to the ballpark? Vin Scully, not impressed. So this dude, just catches HRs for fun with his crew. That’s awesome.
19. The Cincinnati Reds (Brando). Needs 11, 12, and 13. Snazzinnati isn’t paradise and they don’t have cool fan videos. What they do have going for them is the All Star Game. You can buy one good standing room only ticket for the All-Star game for $350 right now. Remember, that’s a GOOD standing room only ticket.
20. The Texas Rangers (JJ). Needs 9, 12, and 13. You may think The Rangers should be higher on this list. You must be named JJ. Here’s what I have to say about The Rangers...Prince...Fielder...I never thought I’d enjoy Prince Fielder being on my fantasy squad. NEVER. But I’m so happy Prince Fielder is crushing the ball right now.
21. The Miami Marlins (Kirill). Needs 11, 12, and 13. No team has been as cold as the Marlins have been. This is The Runs Challenge 2k15 imitating real life baseball. Baseball life real imitating 2k15 Challenge Runs The is this.
22. The Pittsburgh Pirates (MF). Needs 11, 12, and 13. I haven’t done a shout out to my good friend Michael Friedman yet (because the Pirates are so average and so unnewsworthy I haven’t even thought about them the last seven weeks). Sorry MF!
23. The Chicago White Sox (Shane). Needs 9, 10, 11, and 13. I always like to see The White Sox at the bottom of the AL Central. If there was a way to ensure The White Sox finished with the worst record in baseball AND came in last place in The Runs Challenge 2k15 I would have already made that deal.
24. The Chicago Cubs (Darnold). Needs 8, 10, 12, and 13. Dave wasn’t too happy with his Cubs draw and now I see why. While the Cubs aren’t bad, they certainly aren’t going to score 13 runs in a game. Plus, who wants to root for The Cubs?
25. The Seattle Mariners (Carnold). Needs 9, 10, 12, and 13. Literally, the only thing I know about the Seattle Mariners is they have this crazy good pitcher named King Felix. Are they a new team? Anyone good play for them?
26. The Boston Red Sux (Keyana). Needs 10, 11, 12, and 13. It’s getting kinda boring hearing about shitty teams isn’t it? Don’t worry, I won’t spare you. I think the ONLY person upset about this ranking is Keyana. The ONLY person upset about the BoSox season this far is my friend Ricky. I mean they are sitting 2.5 back in a division that has flipped more times than Kerri Strug. Wait, who the Hell am I kidding? EVERYONE in Boston is pissed about this Red Sox team. They aren’t good enough OR bad enough to drown out all the talk about DEFLATEGATE!!!!
27. The Baltimore Orioles (Velma). Needs 10, 11, 12, and 13. As we know, the city of Bodymore Murderland has seen better days as of late. As have the Orioles. They are playing average baseball in an average division. Averages don’t mean anything in this game.
28. The Los Angeles Angels (Forbush). Needs 7, 8, 9, 11, and 13. It must suck to suck, but I bet it’s a lot better to suck if you get to watch Mike Trout every night.
29. The New York Metropolitans (Rebecca - light of my life, fire of my lions). Needs 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13. This pains me to say this, but The Mets are back to being a garbage team from Queens. They just witnessed The Nationals go from last to first place in the division (while shooting to the top of TRC2k15 charts) and look pretty scary offensively. Is it over? No, but it very well could be.
30. The Philadelphia Phillies (Jarnold). Needs 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16. There’s pretty much no way they will close 9-13 based on the previous seven weeks so we might as well go for the glory. On paper they may be tied with the Mets, but in actuality, they are so out of whack it’s mind blowing. If there is one thing to look forward to Young Jack (with the exception of a great tennis season, being gainfully employed, graduating high school top of your class, summertime, and going to Northwestern University in the fall) it’s The Giants once occupied this spot and look at me them now!
In other news around the league:
- Miguel Cabrera is a beast. And just for good measure... This picture sums up a lot about baseball for me. #3. Hit the HR that took The Tigers back to the World Series after 22 years. #2. The BIG CAT!?! My FIRST favorite baseball player ever! #1. Miggy? Comeon! Take us back to the promised land! Be our John Krasinski! Lastly, the fact I found that picture under the #perrossalvajes on instagram was just the best.
- CHEATERS! There have been a rash (read: two) of instances where pitchers were ejected from games because of foreign substances on their arms. If you are a pitcher you basically have to shower before you leave the bullpen. Keeping a secret stash of Vaseline, Lubriderm, KY, tar, dead bugs, Mrs. Butterworth’s, resin, bug spray, and/or anything else sticky, slick, wet or wipeable on your being is NOT allowed.
- HOMERUNS! Nelson Cruz: 17 / Bryce Harper: 16 / The Field
- FIGHTS! None to report this week. But there was some major Bullpen hi-jinx in the Tigers/’Stros game on Sunday in Detroit. After the Star Spangled Banner the competing bullpens staged a stand off.
- King Felix and Michael Wacha both have 7 wins this season.
- Bernie Williams, classical guitarist, had his number, 51, retired at Yankee Stadium this weekend.
