A Transgender Adaptation of Twelfth Night: Casting A Transgender Adaptation of Twelfth Night: Costuming

I wrote these essays for a Shakespeare class I took in college in 2022, one was written at the beginning of the semester and the other was written at the end of the semester. Twelfth Night was the first play we read for that course and I absolutely loved it, the professor and I had multiple conversations about that play alone and our experiences of being transgender (my professor identified as nonbinary).

I highly recommend reading the Casting essay first and the Costuming essay second. These were informal essays, which explains the informal writing style and the use of first-person pronouns. I would love to hear any feedback! And if someone sends these to Ian McKellen for inspiration on the upcoming Twelfth Night adaptation, I'm kissing you on the mouth.

🛒 I guess my common themes and feels are love, happiness, belonging, the implication of happily ever after.

🎢 I’d say Running Away (together) because it unexpectedly spawned five more short fics and You Gotta Rub Me The Right Way! because it was meant to be a one shot follow up to a one shot, and somehow became 20 chapters long.

🌞 My preferred time to write is whenever I can get my stupid brain to cooperate and put words on screen. Which is not often these days. Back when fic came (fairly) easy, the middle of the night when trying to sleep was a common time for the ideas to start coming…. My brain is an arsehole.

❌ I’m not 100% if it counts as a trope, but I would never write a major character death. I generally don’t kill anyone I like. I wouldn’t write Serena or Bernie being unfaithful (fuck canon and bollocks to Leah) I have written smut, but I don’t think I’m good at it, and find it really, really difficult.

Fragrance for Bernie Wolfe please?

I'm not sure what this says about my ego, but most of the fragrances tend to associate with Bernie are ones that I wear myself (not that I'm anything like her lol)

Generally speaking, I think Bernie is one for fresh/clean and sandalwood-y fragrances. I also think that labels don't matter much to her, she just picks something she likes and rolls with it, regardless of brand or price tag.

I think in the 90s she was a ck one girl and she probably kept wearing that one for decades. Maybe she also had a bottle of something slightly more feminine/elegant (yet still light and fresh) for special occasions, like 1881 pour femme by Cerruti or - yes, really - J'adore.

Hermès Voyage is another one of my personal favourites that I can picture her wearing, and the theme also fits her personality quite nicely.

Another one that I love and that used to be my headcanon scent for Bernie until recently is Une Nuit à Montauk - Nothing but Sea and Sky by Une Nuit Nomade. (Because just because she doesn't care for labels doesn't mean she can't wear Niche Perfumes, right?). But I recently discovered another beautiful fragrance by the same brand and I think this might be my ultimate Bernie Wolfe headcanon fragrance: Une Nuit à Oman - Sun Bleached. It is clean and creamy and fresh yet at the same time somehow also warm and slightly spicy. And it even has vanilla, which I know a lot people in the fandom like to associate with her - I could never get behind it because usually I'm not a massive fan of vanilla, but here it really works as it's not overly sweet.
