probably unpopular opinion but i don't get the juxtaposition of miyazaki as a grump uncle to ghibli's output beyond just considering ghibli's optics. sure if you just look at a semi-random collection of stills or clips from the catalogue the movies appear whimsical and carefree, but if you actually watch Howl or Mononoke they are war movies that always left me with a somber consideration of the world that Grave of the Fireflies did...
