I live with a dorm/roommate who is deaf, and it's led to some interesting things I never really thought about before I moved in with her.
Whenever someone knocks at my door, I automatically say "come in" without thinking. So the first few times she knocked on my door I went "come in," and after a few seconds of silence go "Oh shit, right" and open the door
Whenever I go to her door or when I'm wondering if the bathroom is occupied, I won't knock and will instead jiggle the doorknob. Our dorm has lever-type knobs so she'll see it moving and let me know if she's ok the room. I got so used to it that I kept doing it at my mom's house, and she was really confused
I'm taking online ASL lessons in my spare time to communicate better. We have ASL courses on campus but my schedule is full and I'm already learning Russian. So far I know basic stuff like "how are you," "sorry," etc. I figured it'd be more convenient than constantly having to read my lips.
Our dorm building has fire alarms in the halls to let us know when we need to evacuate, but there isn't one that flashes in our dorm rooms. So if they go off and you're a) hard of hearing and b) not in the hall, you don't know the alarm is going off. Anyway during the first fire drill of the semester, I was in the shower and rushed to get some clothes on and get Uno and I out of the building (I didn't know it was a drill). And I was looking for my roommate outside and realized she may not have heard the alarm and was still inside. I was freaking out and worried she might be in danger until they said it was a drill, and after our RA found out they said they'd work on installing a flashing alarm in her room ASAP.
