Wetenschappers slaagde er 60 jaar geleden al in om het brein van muizen zo te stimuleren dat ze het eetgedrag van de muizen konden beïnvloeden. Door bepaalde delen van het brein elektrisch te stimuleren begonnen de muizen te eten, of ze nou honger hadden of niet. Nieuw onderzoek uitgevoerd door het UNC School of Medicine heeft het exacte circuit verantwoordelijk voor (disfunctioneel) eetgedrag gevonden. Het circuit (specifiek; de gaba neuronen in de bed nucleus van de stria terminalis of BNST) vormt een brug tussen de amygdala, het gedeelte van de hersenen geassocieerd met emoties en de laterale hypothalamus, het gedeelte van de hersenen verantwoordelijk voor basala gedragingen zoals seks, agressie en eten. Wanneer de onderzoekers het BNST stimuleerde begonnen de muizen zonder remming te eten. Ze aten binnen 20 minuten meer dan de helft van hun dagelijkse calorie inname, opvallend was dat de muizen ook een voorkeur hadden voor vetrijk voedsel. De muizen vertoonde tevens gedrag geassocieerd met beloning, wat suggereert dat de muizen ook meer plezier beleefden aan het eten. Wanneer de onderzoekers het BNST uitschakelde toonde de muizen amper meer interesse voor voedsel, ook wanneer ze al tijden niet meer hadden gegeten.
De onderzoekers suggereren dat een afwijking in het BNST verantwoordelijk is voor eetstoornissen als anorexie, boulimia en binge-eating disorder (overeten, obesitas). De gedachte dat overgewicht of ondergewicht te wijten is aan een gebrek aan wilskracht is onder wetenschappers al tijden niet meer gangbaar. De rol van psychische kenmerken en disfuncties in het brein worden steeds groter en duidelijker met betrekking tot gewichtsproblematiek.
