Overfishing and Marine Species Extinction (Speciesism) - Storytime
I’m a senior in high school and today we had some down time at the end of a class. My teacher, a 20+ year biology teacher I might add, decided to look up videos on the internet. She first played a video of a man freeing two fish from a net that they were caught in near shore. My classmates empathized with the fish that was clearly distraught, and cooed when the two fish were freed and swam away together. It was pretty cute. I couldn’t help but turn to my friend and make another one of those dreaded “vegan comments” that they’re so used to from me. I said to her, “It doesn’t make sense to me, people think it’s adorable when these two fish are freed from a net, but entire marine species are becoming endangered, going extinct or at least nearing extinction because of overfishing. Why do we empathize with these two fish and not with the rest?” She nodded her head in agreement, understanding my point. Thinking I’d succeeded, I turned back to the screen. My teacher was now playing a video of an “adorable” little boy holding up a fish by the hook in the fish’s mouth that he’d just caught for the first time. I turned to my friend and she said with excitement, “I have a picture just like that from when I was little!!!” The little boy then accidentally dropped the fish on the ground and the video shows it jumping around. It was absolutely dreadful to watch, for me, but why was the video of fish being freed so endearing while this video reminded them of a happy childhood memory? Why the disconnect? Does it have to do with the fact that the fish that were freed were adorable puffer fish while the fish that was caught by the boy was less exotic and more ordinary? Does that make that fish less deserving to live? Should all living beings not be treated the same?
Bottom Line: Why are some animals admired as beautiful, while others are seen as food? I’d love to hear your thoughts…

Vegetarian or pescotarian
I hate those people who say: "I'm a vegetarian, but I do eat fish" Well, fuck you! If you are a 'vegetarian' but you do eat fish. Then you're a PESCOTARIAN!!! So please don't act like you're a vegetarian, because you're not!
calling yourself a pesco/pollotarian is so stupid. like what’s the point? just stop eating things that used to be alive..??
