The Wonderful Year of Mickey Mouse: Quack Quack Bicker Bicker: A Donald and Daisy Shortstacular
Hello all you happy people and welcome back to the wonderful year of mickey mouse.
This .. is the one i've been most excited for all retrospective. As we hit halfway, it's finally time to talk about he of the sweetest dispostion and all the luck. Who else would we talk about for his birthday week but Donald Duck?
Donald is my faviorite Disney character. I've covered tons of his work from his time with the cabs to grabbing on to some ducktales to his excellent shorts. He can be a loving father, an angry asshole, a down on his luck everyman, a subpar boyfriend, an abused boyfriend, an ostrich owner, a duck pointing a rifle at a baby penguin, a citzen of nazi germany (Covered that earlier this month), a sailor, a beloved brother, a bickering brother, an uncle, an abusive uncle, a superhero, a victim of wage abuse and of course he of the sweetest dispoistion. He's been everything everywhere all at once and The Mickey Mouse SHorts capture that well: he's often Mickey's grumpy friend, sometimes daisy's grumpy boyfriend, sometimes her entirely resonable and loving boyfriend, and sometimes he just struggles to get a fucking bag open. These shorts do my boy well and as an added Bonus do Daisy well, letting her get in on the fun. It's why I gave the special to both of them as most of Donald's stories are daisycentric. Even when she dosen't technically appear we still get Hallucination Daisy to fill in. She's a good friend, a put upon at times partner, a bad sport, and a hell of a driver.
So we're honoring our faviorite duck couple with 6 stellear shorts. Let's roll.
The Adorable Couple
The Adorable Couple might've been my faviorite Mickey mouse short and while tha'ts no longer the case, the final one fucking punches my heart too good for that, it's still damn fine in large part thanks to one musical moment. One perfect distlation of the more angry and pissy moments of Donald and Daisy's relationship
Look the entire rest of the short could've been mickey mouse's rap album and it still would've been in the top ten of these shorts. It's catchy, it's perfectly performed by the two of them, and it's greatly animated and using Daisy's dismissive nail filing to give it some base was genius.
The rest of the short is still genius though as the whole concept is Mickey and Minnie, who are so cute it can and will give you a heart attack, can't fathom someone else's can be entirely passive agression and active shouting and still be a functional relationship. I mean a lot of the time it isn't but I love the idea of the short that these two trying to get them to just be happy.. only pisses them off, that they LIKE fighting. We don't see THEM be affectionate because Disney is afraid to show full on graphic hate sex between two ducks on the Disney channel. Don Rosa barely got away with implying it
You just can't have Donald's angry cum noises as the lead in to the Suite Life On Deck reruns i'm sad to say.
So Mickey and Minnie just can't undrestand. Their lovemaking is slow, sweet, and other ajdective si'm sure but unlike Donald i'm not as willing to speculate on Mickey's sex life. All my mind can conjur is he goes OH BOY when he cums and tha'ts enough to make me question my thought processes.
So it makes sense they just try too hard and have to right it by getting their rain cloud back. I also love just how over the top wholesome they are: it's a common trait in these shorts, if stripped away when it'd be funnier, but here Mickey nearly passes out just from seeing his friends fight and needs gumdrops and can't imagine fighting Minnie and Donald is right to get the popcorn to watch them try to fight to bring it back, which is enough foreplay for Daisy and Donald to get back to buisness and all to be right with the world. Top notch short, the better the more I think about it.
Captain Donald
Captain Donald is really a perfect setup for a Donald Duck story: Turns out Donald dosen't really know how to sail and has been lying to daisy and because he sucks at lying she's tired of his web of lies and if she finds out he's doing it again, she's going to dump him. She's also VERY turned on by him being a sailor. She has a thing for men in uniform.
Look I could lie to you and say this isn't going to be a weirdly horny blog about Donald Duck but that ship has sailed. You made it through the last one your stuck now. And since your stuck now please consider joining my patreon for exclusive reviews and voting maybe.

I need the money. Talking abotu Donald Duck's sex life shockingly does not pay for itself.
Seriouslyt hough times have been very tight and I could use the extra money to if nothing else play for netflix. So please consider throwing in a buck a month or more if you can. Thank you. Now back to Donald Duck's web of horny lies already in progress.
So Donald has to fake it with Mickey's help as Mickey invited himself, Minnie and Daisy for a day out on a boat as Donald didn't loop him in on the lie. In fairness Mickey has a poker face that says "please rob me", so I get not trusting him with secrets.
The rest of the short is just fun slapstick as donald climbs the sail, get sstuck and then gets stuck in a typhoon manging to impress daisy and get his outfit shreded. So now he's a pilot. Bad news he still has no idea what he's doing. Good news he knows a pilot. Bad news...
I mean his sister is also a pilot and has defintely gotten herself into shenanigans trying to get laid, but you know Donald isn't going to ask Della for help unless he's about to be strangled by a mummy and even then we'll see.
Split Decision
This one's just pure fun, with a great high concept: Mickey wants to help cure donald of his rage as Daisy is about to dump him. He does raise the valid point that she always says that but given he literally gets fussy at the drop of a hat (a gag I love as is Mickey's knowing look as he drops the hat), so they try to see if Ludvig von Drake has a thing that can make him not mad.
Given this is the same man who made the entire universe Donald's Ass before someone reset it
This goes about as well as you'd expect with donald instead of being calmed down being split into two versions of himself: Drunk Donald who loves everyone and everything and Angry Donald, a monstroisty of pure rage who levels about half a city block. Donald is so reliant on his rage stripping it out leaves really nothing left and distilling it kickstarts the end of days. This is just an excuse to have fun iwth both with Drunk Donald hugging someone's wife and Angry Donald rampaging. We also get Hallucination Daisy as Mickey's guilt over causing this leads to him hallucinating her. The hallucination slaps him for his hurbis as it should and can because it's daisy.
He realizes Daisy is the key and gets angry donald to beat up drunk donald by getting them both horned up which somehow recombines them
So Donald's back to normal... if with a very angry ass. That's not me his ass would like to rage. This short is hilaroius and the idea donald is nothing without his anger as it's that key to him and he's just a dlerious wreck hugging everyone is great. I also like how drunk drunk donald sounds. The art on both is great paticuarlly rage donald all super deformed and murdery. I'd have a beeer with him before he splits me in half.
Two Can't Play
Look the second Kev pitched this there were a few shorts I knew I had to do and while some like Our Floating Dreams and Potatoland we've seen, a LOT of them are concentrated in this special. Two Can't Play is one of the top ones.
The setup is simple: Donald and Daisy play tennis with who you'd expect
But since he and Tina are on a break they had to call Mickey and Minnie who just once want to win while Donald and Daisy are about as obonxious about winning as yo'ud expect. It is geninely cute to see them bonding and at peace for once even if that peace involves being just
The hypercolor outfits, the anime hair on donald, the fucking gloating, ti's so damn amazing. I would wager this short exists soley because someone drew these outfits and then they wrote a short as an excuse to use them. It's so damn majestic and so them to just be.. garbage people. just the worst. But still so damn cute.
So when the unambigously adorable duo find a cheating device over by the vending machine, they think about it for one minute, see Donald and daisy have got out the air horns which can only mean we're minutes from the live sex celebration, and decide to cheat just to serve it to them.
I love the animation on the tennis, on Donald and Daisy getting clobbered and how poorly they naturally take being beaten and their reactoins are satisfying. As is the twist: their also cheating and whlie they try to claim victory their gear shorts out leading to one last tennis and everyone involved's clothes reparing, which is a shame donald's tron vest is the tron best, and of course the underdogs win and gloat as they deserve. I love you donald and daisy but you desrved that.
Supermarket Scramble
Look did I put this one here because I relate to Donald struggling to open one of those godforsaken supermarket produce bags?
I also put it here because it might be my faviorite mickey mouse short and defintelyf rom the Wonderful World of mickey Mouse sequel series.
Mickey and Co are having an adorably swell day, love the cycled but still cute animation of them making .. I guess grass angles? grangles? their doing snow angles in a field let's just say that and move on.
So wanting to cap such a perfect day that he's glad he spent with you, Mickey decides on a barbeque and to team up: He goes for the fixins, donald goes for fruit because he's bi as fuck like yours truly, Minnie meats
And Daisy will drive because.. they needed something for Daisy to do. Goofy's on lobster.
This short is really 5 smaller concepts stacked and cut between each other and it's beautiful. It's the greatest grocery disaster since Dethklok tried to go to the food library
Almost every one of these is gold. Goofy's dive into the lobster tank is bronze, but the brick joke of him getting left behind and taken home by some lady is gold. We will not ruminate on Goofy's sex life as he's already told the world and his son in detail
The rest are all just pure gold: Mickey gets roped into being the manager as it's really just as easy as giving someone a sweater and saying I'M FRE I'M FREE, Minnie has to go fucking feral to get some sausage from pete, Daisy has to deal with parking on the curb and everyone being mad at her, and Donald.. well donald struggles just to get a bag open. It's all ncie character stuff: Mickey is a natural people pleaser, Minnie is hilarous seeing someone this nice go apeshita s she deals with a crowd of assholes, Daisy gives not one iota of a shit and her rolling up the window on a cop telling her not to park there who just.. walks off defeatd is gold. And life hates donald so of course trying to open one of those accursed motherfucking bags would lead to static and him gaining electric powers a big unruly mob. And OF COURSE Daisy would be the one to fix it wondering what the fucks going on and reminding Mickey, HEY YOU DON'T WORK HERE. It's a fun, breezy short and a nice one that works in the whole gang.
Just the Four of Us
And we end on another Wonderful World episode and my second favorite, a donald and Daisy focused episode.. but what I like is unlike the rest it's not about them fighting or being assholes or implying rough sex. The two of them just want a fucking break after a string of disasterious double dates with Minnie and Mickey, cumilating in trying to rocket to the moon.
It's a great premise as, like the Adorable Couple, it nicely plays on the contrast between the sugary over the top Mickey and Minnie and the more groudned and conflict ridden Donald and Daisy. Donald and Daisy would just be happy with a movie or a nice sandwich or just to fucking stop for a week, while Mickey and Minnie are convinced they have to try the hardest and give their friends THE BESTTTTTT instead of just letting them be tired and are so emotoinally fragile their afraid to just tell them what htey need to hear: No. We need a break, we love you guys but please stop.
So Donald decides to default to what he's worst at: Lying. It's a sweet gesture just get out of it by telling them they can't go.. but Donald makes a crucial error: He tells them their sick, and so the rest of the episode is a slasher movie where Mickey and Minnie try to take care of Donald and Daisy. It's geninely nice ot see Donald and Daisy as a team, and while Donald understandably feels bad he fucked up, in a shocking show of restraint Daisy dosen't pile on him.. even when warning him her yells are less "YOU DONE FUCKED UP BOY" and more "THEIR COMING FOR US". She's not mad at him just understandably terrified at her friends overperforming. It's relatable: while i've never had couple friends like this because i've never coupled long enough for that, we al lhave friends or aquantinces we geninely love but who are just.. a lot and feel bad when we set boundries even though that's healthy.
And necessary as Mickey asking for a spoonful of sugar to make the medicine go down or Daisy singing creepy nursery rhymes is just great. It's geninely hilaroius the whole time.. sepcailly as the coule get an actual cold and go into the rain just to avoid them. Also Goofy questions his reality. As you do.
The ending is the only part of this short I really don't like: the two end up in the hopstial.. and end up stranded with mickey and minnie when.. they did nothing bad enough to deserve this outcome. Donald and Daisy I mean. They SHOULD have set boundries sure, but we've seen that just seeing Donald and Daisy fight nearly made Mickey pass out and having a fight with his girlfriend was geninely taxing. It would've been hard to actually tell Mickey no without him sobbing for a week straight. But tha'ts also his problem, but being dishonest dosen't mean "oh well the thing we wnated to avoid should happen". Mickey and Minnie aren't bad people.. but neither are Donald and Daisy for just wanting a second. This short is still great but really needed a second draft for that ending as it's the most predictable and eh direction for it to go with.
Next Time: Summer continues as it's the wonderful SUMMER of mickey mouse and the worst scrooge voice you've ever heard. Thanks for reading, later days

“I’ll be in the kitchen making sandwiches for lunch, okay? You two play nice.” Steve kissed the top of your head before getting up.
“We will, captain!” Peter said.
Somewhat distracted, you looked up from your Legos when you noticed Steve walking away. “Dada?”
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“You go?”
Steve laughed. “I’m making sandwiches, my love.”
“Oh!” You bounced excitedly. “Can I have cheese in mine?”
Steve came back and gave you another kiss as if he couldn’t help himself. “Yes, you can have all the cheese in the world.”
“Woo!”
Steve grinned to himself as you did your little happy dance and continued playing with Peter.

The next few minutes were peacefully quiet. The occasional rustle came from the kitchen as did the clicking of plastic toys from the living room.
Peter was looking back and forth between the fighter jet he was building and your pile of untouched Lego pieces. “Can I have your circle piece?” he asked.
“Ya. Can I have your blue one?”
“This? Sure.”
“Dank you, Pete Pete.”
Steve poked his head in from the kitchen. “What was that, sweetheart? You went peepee?” He quickly washed his hands and rushed over to you.
“Wha? Nooo.”
“It’s okay baby, Dada’s gotcha.” Steve picked you up and quickly ran into your room. Had he been more focused, he would’ve noticed that your bottom was totally dry.
“Dada. I not peepee!”
“Nothing to be embarrassed of, baby. It happens to all of us.” He placed you on the changing table and ran around, grabbing new clothes and changing supplies.
You were a little embarrassed, but not for the reasons that Steve was thinking. Not to mention how upset you were that he interrupted your playtime. “I not peepee!”
“Then why’d you say peepee? You know we don’t make potty jokes.”
“Pete. Pete.” You made sure to say the “t’s” this time.
Peter appeared in your doorway, hand covering his eyes. “Um, Mister Rogers? I think they were just saying my name.”
Steve set down the things he was holding and nodded in understanding. “Pete Pete.” He sighed. “You can look, Peter. Nothing happened here.” Dada helped you off the table and gave you a light pat on the butt before you and Peter ran off to play again.
Steve put his hands on his hips and sighed again, shaking his head. “Pete Pete. Sam’s gonna riot when he hears this one.”
Goof Week Grand Finale!: A Goofy Movie: Finally Seeing This Movie I 2 I (Patreon Goal Review)
Hyuck, Yahoooey and Gorsh all you happy people! I’m proud to present the epic finale to my week long Goofy Birthday Celebration: A Goofy Movie!
As you can tell by the title this review is a result of me hitting my 15 dollar stretch goal on Patreon a few months back, originally planning to review it in April for the movie’s anniversary.
Once I had the idea for Goof Week though, it was obvoius this had to be the finale: it’s easily Goofy’s biggest appearance, it’s iconic to my generation and the generation before, and it had great symmetry: opening with him and Max in Goof Troop and closing with Max all grown up and Goofy struggling to connect with him. I got approval from my patreons and that’s that. If you’d like to learn more, it’s at the end of the review as I didn’t want to shove an add up front and I feel doing so in the past few weeks has lead to less people reading my work. While I do NEED my patreon and review commissions to get by doing this, I do not want to at the expense of you the reader especially those of you who would gladly help but like me don’t have a ton of money.
So getting to the movie itself, like most of you reading this I grew up with the movie. I had it on VHS. It’ spart of why I used the VHS cover instead of the theatrical poster like I usually do with movies> The other reason is frankly that the theatrical poster is as generic as all hell.
I mean i’ve seen WORSE posters bu tthe VHS/Blu Ray cover just invokes a feeling of warmth the film proper does and feels more down to earth: Goofy on top of the car being himself, Max and Roxanne talking to each other, Bobby being there despite no one asking for him to be there. It just fits the movie well. it’s smiley and happy likely like Disney wanted as I don’t think they wanted to market THIS to 90′s parents
But it still feels more like the actual movie and less like generic box art.
But yeah I had it as a kid.. but I will fully own the fact I didn’t like it because two scenes of it freaked me out. Oddly it WASN’T the opening, which is geninely horrifying, but two scenes: one was the principal office scene, with the harsh words of Mazur combined with Goofy imagining the electric chair really getting to me and the other was the iconic Hot Tub scene. That one was LESS startling, but still left me feeling unsettled.. which in hindsight was entirely the point so mission acomplished.
So yeah my brain eventually conflated not liking two scenes as a kid as not liking the movie and I avoided this one for years never stopping to ask WHY I didn’t like it. I like Max a LOT on house of mouse and I loved the sequel.. but I never went back to the original. But a combination of ducktales 2017 and some self reflection got me itching to give the film a fair shot now i’m a grown ass man whose long sinced conquered most of my fears from back then.. except Angelica’s hypothetical brother from tha tone episode of rugrats. That thing is objectively fucking terrifying.
Point is I felt it was time to give the movie the fair shot little me never gave it.
Did I like it, Did I love it? Did I want some more of it?... well yes, yes I did.
And i’ll show you why for the first time ever me and this film are seeing eye to eye. Under the cut!
The Making Of:
So this film came about as film’s often do: because a high up exec was passionate about an idea and wanted to make sure it happened no matter whose throat he needed to slit.
The exec in question was Jeffery Katzenberg, whose desire for the film DID come from a genuine and heartwarming place to quote an article vanity fair did on the movie for it’s 25th annviersary
“Jeffrey Katzenberg, like a lot of parents, was struggling at the time with his teenage daughter,” explained Jymn Magon, Goof Troop’s story supervisor and the first screenwriter to attempt the project. “He said, ‘I couldn’t figure out how to get through to her. But we ended up taking a car trip together.… Somewhere along the way, we bonded. I want a story like that.’ I said, ‘Okay.’” They were off.
It was decided from there to base the film on the Goof Troop, giving things a couple year time jump so Max would be the right age. It was also likely decided to do this as Disney was trying to get a new lable, MovieToons, up and running using their foreign production studios. This ended up fallig apart as the first and only MovieToons film, Treasure of the Lost Lamp which i’ve previous covered flopped pretty hard, btu the film much like Treasure did still use the European and French studios disney had set up to help expedite things.
So while the MovieToons part got dropped the movie pressed on anyway. It still wasn’t without bumps. Execs weren’t sure Goofy’s voice would work for a whole film, first wanting a celebrity to play him and weirdly eyeing Steve Martin, lest you think the trend of shoving celebrities into animated films ahead of experienced voice actors is a brand new thing, and then having Bill Farmer record his parts minus the goofy voice. Neither panned out and for the better, especially since Bill proved with this film that he could still emote AMAZINGLY with Goofy.
The film also got delayed at one point because, according to director Kevin Lima, who was a FOUNTAIN of information as he did a live tweet along with the 25tth anniversary livestream of the film that revealed a lot of interesting behind the scenes stuff and was also in aforementioned vanity fair article, the monitor they used to film the animation had a blown out pixel so 2/3 of the film had a black dot on it and had to be redone.
The film did get an honestly more fitting release date in May.. but no real fanfare or promotion, only getting a handful of tie-in product. The reason for this is simple: Katzenberg left Disney before the film’s release and given Eisner had taken over and was angry about his exit, and likely wasn’t the only one, no one had any interest in actually promoting this film and were only releasing it because “eh might as well”. Wouldn’t be the last time Disney was garbage to a film because they didn’t make it either
Just sayin. It burns me up too: the film was released in April, just before vacation season and just at the right time for a road trip movie and really HAD no competition family film wise: oh sure there were huge successes like Bad Boys and my boy Tommy Boy but family film wise it’s only competitoin was Major Payne, which was in it’s second week and the Pebble and the Penguin the week after which.. yeah is a fight so one sided you can stll see the pengy shaped indent in the wall. Had a neat villain song though.
The ONLY reason this film didn’t succeed at box office was because Disney had no intrest in actually backing it and whlie critics weren’t happy with it, that’s never stopped a film before: I mentioned how Problem Child was the only competition Treasure of the Lost Lamp did and naturally creamed it. That film was HATED by critics and still is, but raked in the dough and earned itself a sequel. If Critic’s absolutely going to town on a film stopped a film from being a success then Adam Sandler wouldn’t still be giving people scabies via netflix and we’d all be happier for it.
My point is proven by what happened next: While theatrically the film didn’t do great, it got a second life on VHS, becoming a MASSIVE seller and a nostalgic faviorite for 90′s kids everywhere. The film would go on to get tons of merch and when it had an anniversary event at D23, it ended up being THE most attended panel according to Bill Farmer. The film is one of those true home video success stories and i’m glad for it as the film deserved way better than it got and got it, it just took a bit is all. So with that out of the way, let’s talk about the film itself eh?
Son of Goof:
We open with a dream sequence where max.. is in a white version of his usual outfit and runs into his crush Roxanne in a cornfield. Before this gets very R-Rated very quick, he slowly turns into his dad in a sequence Lima modled after the transformations in american werewolf in london, slowly turning into his dad. It’s an oddly horrifying scene.. and even odder this isn’t what scared me as a kid. I mean you’d think a horrfying transformation sequence based on a film from a murderer would get me more than wallace shawn being a dick but here we are.
So after this Max awakens from his slumber and gets a call from PJ telling him to hurry up and that HE SLEPT TOO LONG. A detail I loved and noticed on watch is that Max has a bunch of powerline posters and a cutout in his room,a great way to set up Max being a huge fan of his even before Max explains who he is as the end of the scene.
The scene itself is a masterclass in setup, setting up the major conflict in around two minutes with no real effort. Goofy first sorta just barges in, clad only in a towel on head and his body, then knocks. This shows off both that Max wants boundries.. and Goofy isn’t remotely respecting them. Likewise when Goofy mentions he’s there to get laundry max gestures to teh pile on the floor and Goofy mentions “we talked about this” showing it’s not a one sided conflict: Max is also slipping in aspects and isn’t the best son. Max refuses a ride despite the time rush, setting up hi sembarassment of goofy. In a matter of minutes we get a LOT about both characters and all damn naturally. Excellent stuff.
After Today:
So after Goofy accidently ruins Max’s cutout we get our first song. I was surprised realizing this film was a musical a few weeks back, with tons of songs of varying kinds: the two awesome pop rnb songs from power line, the more brodaway style after today and nobody else to you, the folk song with a dash of broadway on the road and the theme park song. But given I freaking love musicals it just made me more eager to watch it.
Part of it is that while I was unfamiliar with most of the soundtrack outside of having heard a cover of Stand Out by NateWantsToBattle and having seen it in “The Raiders of the Doomsday Vault!” over in Ducktales. This one is the execption: I ran into this one randomly on Spotify when listening to another song as a recomendation and loved it immeditley. This song is just AWESOME, with a great sound and really feels like the last day of school. And the visuals just make it POP that much more.
Max’s voice is done by singer and Disney kid extra Aaron Lohr, with various others as the chorus and various spoken word bits. But Lohr is the clear anchor, and just OWNS it, showing us Max’s inner angst in an epic way, while again feeling like how the end of School does, the excitement to end it, to get goin with your summer and really enjoy it. I can’t say enough how much I love this song or the various gags. Two last things to note before we move on. First I was very much the up with the comics kid, just wearing various superhero shirts instead of a star trek original series uniform. The other is the awesome and widely spreaded live action remake of the song, seriously holy shit Ted Skords did great work. He even LOOKS like Max’s va Jason Marsden.
They even got all the little slapstick gags in, if within reason for live action. It was so awesome disney themslves played it at that D23 event.
So after that awesomeness Max runs into Roxanne and TRIES to talk to her.. but like me at that age, and now, he utterly freezes, stutters a bit and then lets out a goofy “hyuck”. Okay the LAST PART hasn’t happened to me but it’s really a matter of when not if.
Stand Out:
So Max gets to PJ and after filling him in on everything, PJ tries to talk him out of their crazy stunt to no avail. PJ is once again played by Rob Paulsen whose voice for him works just as well for both ages and isn’t really changed at all.
But to pull off what Max’s planning they need help. So it’s then we get Bobby... who is played... by PAULY SHORE
I do not like this man. I do not dislike him as a PERSON mind you, he seems nice enough and was fine with taking the piss out of himself with both his film Pauly Shore is Dead and his guest apperance on Futurama
But as an actor he has exactly one mode: OBNOXIOUS. The man at least in his prime could not act without mugging. Granted one of the few films i’ve seen him in is BioDome which counts as a War Crime in most UN Member States, but even in other smaller rolls the man just cannot help being the most annoying thing god ever blighted the eath with. Yes even worse than Adam Sandler, Sandler was at least funny to START with. I do not see what America saw in Pauly Shore. He’s the Dane Cook of the 90′s, which leads me to the fear that the two will one day star in a buddy comedy movie on netflix that will bring about the apocalypse.. I mean.. what else would you make a Dane Cook or Pauly Shore movie for let alone both.
So yeah outside of his obsession with Chez Whiz, which Max pays him in, he’s not all that entertaining or interesting. Shore also didn’t want to be credited, likely as not to hurt his pg-13 comedy rep.... says the man who WOULD still take a credit for BioDome.. and thought BioDome as a good idea in the first place.
So before we get to what the boys are actually cooking up, we cut to Goofy at work. And things have changed massively since Goof Troop. See as far as I can tell during Goof Troop he worked odd jobs more often than not and had no clear job, if a steady one at all. Meanwhile Pete had a successful enough dealership and had enough money to buy a whole other house, a cabin, and an earthquake machine. I did not make that last one up.
But over the time skip fortunes clearly changed for both of them: for one thing Peg CLEARLY divorced Pete and got custody of Pistol, as neither are mentioned and by the sequel Pete’s celebrating an empty nest, meaning Peg would HAVE to have custody of her. Or the writers just forgot Pete had a wife and daughter btu I like my idea better.
More importantly both have the same job as children’s photographer’s in a stand in for K-Mart. I’m going with S-Mart since we never see the outside, I like the idea scrooge owns it and I like the Evil Dead connection. As for how the heck Goofy could have this job in the ducktales reboot, he probably DOESN’T but there are still places like this their just independent instead of inside big chain stores. Plus he could simply be a self-employed family photographer.
What’s really damming for Pete though is that Goofy.. is GREAT at it. He gets a baby to smile, takes extra care to get to know the kids and is just all around a delight at this. It makes perfect sense too: while he struggles horribly with his currently teenage son, as we saw with Goof Troop he was fine with kids, being loved by both his own son and Pete’s kids. So couple that iwth his goofy likeable nature and he’s a natural.
Pete however.. is terrible at it. He bullies goofy and tries to put on airs of being a better guy at the job and to show goofy “how it’s done” and tries to stop him from bonding like he is.. but it instead comes off like he’s JEALOUS. Not only has he been knocked down to Goofy’s level after presumably the feds seized the dealership.. ironically not for car stuff. He was doing other shady stuff on the lot. Had a partner in it too....
But he just isn’t: he’s impatient with the girl he’s filming and unfocused. The two talk about raising kids and what not and Pete brings up taking PJ on the road.
So back at School we find out Max’s plan: to do a big flashy performance to Powerline’s “Stand Out”, but it requires Bobby to do the effects and Max is worried some other guy named Chad will ask Roxanne out. this isn’t an imaginary guy either, Chad is an actual character and was intended as Max’s rival but his stuff got cut down. He’s played by Joey Laurence which means.. your fine max. Your fine. Your future’s way brighter. It’s not called Max and Joey. Poor Melissa Joan Hart though. But eh a woman’s gotta eat.
So while they work on that we meet Stacey: the head of the student body, loved by all, and a nice nerdy girl. Stacey is a true delight, a fun character with great dialogue, an adorable design and in general just lights things up any time she shows up even if her roll is mostly to try and nudge Roxanne and Max together. She announces she’s having a party next weekend, and hands things off to Principal Mazur
Mazur is voiced by my boy Wallace Shawn. Sadly though while again, Wallace Shawn IS my boy.. he does TOO good a job here. As Mazur rattles off a boring speech about not having fun in summer and what not, he’s deeply unlikeable.. and it’s only about to get worse.
So Max and Co drop Mazur down a trap door and we get our second big number, Stand Out, sung by Tevin Cambell, a protégé of prince’s who sung both power line songs and in general seems like a neat dude. Tevin was in part chosen because of this as Powerline was modled after Prince, along with Michael Jackson and Bobby Brown, though thankfully he mostly takes after the purple one, instead of the pedophile or the wife beater. The movie DOES later have a lawyer friendly cameo of MJ, which likewise has aged like milk left on a sidewalk in hell. But Powerline is awesome and i’ll get more into him when he properly appears in the climax.
As for Stand Out itself.. it’s a fucking classic. There really isn’t a bad song in the bunch this movie has and all but one of them are instant classics to me. It fits Max’s character, his need to be seen and be loved and noticed no matter what it takes, well while still feeling like a classic 90′s pop song. The flying bit he does and the graphics bobby brings up are also just awesome and his singing to roxanne and flying over to her is genuinely a great romantic gesture. it gets ruined by Mazur reigning him in.
So Max and PJ sit in the hallway of Mazur’s office comtemplating their doom while Bobby.. eats cheese and generally is unaware of anything. Did.. did they just record Pauly shore for an afternoon at his house?
Roxanne and Stacey happy upon him and we first get to see Stacey’s adorable shipper on deck tendencies for the two, encouraging Roxanne to comfort max and shoving her towards him. It also makes it clear that Roxanne is JUST as shy and just as into max and he really DIDN’T need the theatrics... though she does appricate them and he takes the chance and asks her out right now and mambos in celebration and being a dick Mazur decides to call goofy instead of you know, talking to the kid himself. What he’s paid for. Which leads us to the scene I dreaded the entire first act and the scene that made me hate the film as a kid:
A Hardy Fuck You Sir:
So yeah Mazur calls goofy and straight up lies to his face. Granted given how Mazur is, he probably GENUINELY BELIVIES all this, but he exagerates what max did calling it gang activity and a riot when while Max DID cause a ruckuss, he did nothing more than drop you down a trap door you anthrmophic personification of a lemon. I’m not saying Max is in the right, you just don’t drop a principal down a trap door unless their trying to murder you. It’s common courtesy. But Mazur is so far over the line he’s circled the globe and reached where he crossed the line in the first place. It’s his JOB as a principal to disiplince students, to talk to parents and to try and genuinely fix problems like this. His PROPER course would be to hold Max after school, which end of year or not he can still do for a little while at least, have goofy come up to talk to him and THEN give his bullshit. Calling goofy AT WORK to scream at him to fix his kid, to BLAME goofy for being a bad parent when he really isn’t, to blame him for his kid’s behavior when Max is a human capable of making his own decisions, and to WORST OF FUCKING all imply that a fucking high school shenanigan to impress a girl is going to lead him to THE ELECTRIC CHAIR is fucking abbohrent, vile and a violation of what a principal should stand for.
Wallace Shawn did WAY too god a job making the fucker hatable and Bill Farmer and the animation make Goofy’s resultin gpanic attack heartbreaking. And again it’s AT WORK. He could’ve cost Goofy his JOB by not you know trying to actually meet with him or talk like an adult. And again i’ts not all on Mazur, Max did something huge, disrputive and dangerous... but it’s how Mazur REACTED to it, not finding a proper punishment but simply trying to guilt bomb his parent into fixint the problem instead of at least trying himself first is disgusting.
So with that Goofy is lost and sad until he happens upon a bunch of Fishing Bobbleheads under a blue light special, thing K-Mart did where something under a blue light was on sale wish more stores had gimmicks like that, gives him the idea to recreate his own treasured trip with his dad and restore his relationship with his son. So Goofy rushes out to do so.
Max meanwhile continues having the best fucknig day of his life: In addition to his date with Roxanne to Stacey’s party, the entire school, rather than laugh at him for how his performance ended rightfully cheers him. I mean again it wasn’t a thing he SHOULD have done but it dosen’t make it less fucking cool. The most popular girl in school hits on him, and Stacey tells her to get the fuck off that’s Roxanne country, and everyone else has respect for him now with PJ leading a chant. Max has gone from outcast to big man on campus in a matter of hours and in a way that won’t go away easy.
So after a cool ride home this naturally goes south as Goofy unveils his plans to take him on the road. This also showcases the duo’s biggest problem, the one that causes pretty much all the problems in their relationship and is driving them apart: they refuse to communicate with one another. And communication snafu’s in fiction can get on my nerves: while it does happen in real life, thier often used in a far from realistic way and used to only drag a plot out MORE instead of in any resonable or dramatic fashion.
Here though the film instead uses it WELL by making it a key character flaw of both Goofs: Max has troouble opening up in general: he LIKES Roxanne but is so plauged by self doubt and self loathing he had to pull off a massvie stunt just to get the confidence to ask her out. With Goofy it’s worse: he just assumes he could never understand anything with him and lashes out, being an absolute ass and unresonable instead of just TELLING HIM. If he’d just TOLD Goofy he had a date Goofy would understand.. he’d still bring up the assembly of course but he probably would’ve simply posponed the trip instead and found some other way to bond with max in the meantime as a compromise. And even if he didn’t he would’ve gladly given Max time to tell her.
Goofy also has trouble but it’s a combination of not being able to articulate his issues with max, being afraid to genuinely address how mopey and angry his son has become towards him and how he still wants to be in his Son’s life. But his bigger issue is that he just forces things on Max without asking him or trying to empathize: he MEANS well but instead of talking to his son about what happened and getting the whole story, and thus being able to scold him but not you know worry he’s going to jail, he just sorta uses that as a trump card to force max to join him and dosen’t bother trying to figure out WHY max is acting out. He assumes he can just fix things with sheer force of will instead of trying to empathize with his son. Both lack empathy with each other and both as a result clash because they simply can’t see each other’s point of view and refuse to.
It’s why THIS kind of miscommuincatoin works: it’s based on character and feels incredibly real instead of forced. The lack of actual commuincatoin and misintepreted situatoins is based on who they are rather than just “well the plot needs to do this”
So Max , not wanting to loose roxanne, does stop by her house where he meets her terrifying dad, grunted by Kevin Lima. Roxanne is devisated when he points it out and once again it’s his lack of commuincation that’s the issue: if he TOLD HER that Goofy was punishing him with a trip over the assembly she’d get it. But he’s so afraid of her even consdiering meeting his dad that he instead backs himself into a corner, lying that Goofy knows powerline and Max will be on stage at the concert instead. this makes things work for now and with that Goofy and Max hit the road!
On The Open Road:
So with that the road trip begins! And it goes about as well as you’d expect for a trip that started wit ha grown man legally kidnapping his sulking asshole teenage son who he still treats like he’s 12. Goofy tries filming the thing, Max is unreceptive and travel games don’t go much of anywhere... though they do feature Walt Disney. And while many question how the hell that works, I have a few theorites, especially given Max’s mickey mouse phone and Mickey’s cameo in a moment.
1) Mickey’s dad (who looks like the classic design mickey), was a big star and did all that and Mickey went his own way)
2) Mickey is a star of film and television
3) Oswald became the big star instead of Mickey in this universe.
4) It’s just some Goofy in-jokes at the company who made this all in good fun, don’t think about it too hard.
We also get the iconic and oft memed gag where Max and Goofy fight over the radio. It works well in context, especially since both aren’t great but you’d see why someone would like them: goofy’s playing high hopes, which while not a terrible song is sung in this version by a grating children’s choir, and Max is listening to some buttrock guitar cords.
So after they break the Raidio we get our next Song, and easily my third faviorite behind I 2 I and After Today Respectively, On the Open Road!
For starters much like After Today banks on Aaron Lohr being awesome (though he’s no slouch here either), this one’s all Bill Farmer. Bill is my faviorite Goofy and damn if this this movie dosen’t reinforce the hell out of that, givng him tons of dramatic moments but also showing off his comedic timing and real sense of character. The latter part is best on display here: we get Goofy in this movie in a nutshell: he’s kind, oblvious to his son’s issues, but knows there IS something so he’s trying his best to work through them even if he dosen’t know how.
He also really sing great as Goofy. Now this may not seem like a lot but singing is already a had thing to do well. Now imagine doing that with an over the top southern drawl. Singing in a character voice is one of THE hardest skills for a VA, never mind WELL. It’s likely why Aaron Lohr took over for Jason Marsden during the songs. It’s not an easy thing to pull of: most of the friendship is magic cast had one voice for singing and one for the regular voice work, while Steven Universe specifically cast all it’s major characters with singing talent in mind to avoid this sort of thing. It’s not that Va’s who can’t do it are bad either, it’s just a VERY hard thing to do if the character isn’t using essentially your own voice. And having checked Farmer’s out of character voice just to be sure while he himself is southren... his isn’t at all like Goofy, or even Hop Pop. So the fact he CAN do this and likely trained himself to do this deserves all the damn praise. That man is a treasure. Please don’t kill him God i’m having a good year for once.
So with this gift Farmer is just a natural fit for a road song, and given Goofy’s nature the film did need one, and he just brings an energy and warmth to it. It just makes you want to sing along like the various passers by. Max also sings and his character is at it’s weakest here as he comes off like a dick. he also directly refrence beverely hills 90210 and we see Micheal Jackson’s glove which....
But otherwise it’s a damn fun number with lots of great gags.. and one sobering moment where Goofy sees a pirsoner and then imagines max in prison garb.
Highlights include Treeny and Wendell, a couple who were SUPPOSED to be a recurring part of the movie showing up where our heroes did, but got cut for the most part for time. The two do show up at the end with Wendell working as Powerline’s roadie and Treeny his backup singer, so it’s not like they disappear, but still good to note.
We also see MICKEY AND GOOFY. Hell yes! And thinking with Ducktales, Maybe Donald got Gladstone to watch the kids for a weekend so he and Mickey could go see power line. And of course their car blew up. But it’s just nice to see Mickey here especially since one of the ONLY Sega-Esque character bans imposed on Ducktales was Mickey. It was just a weird thing to me since they let the shorts and wonderful world do a LOT of weird and wonderful shit with those characters, but are scared of letting someone who, by the time they used Goofy, was established to have the UTMOST respect for Disney’s long rich history use their main character. It’s weird, their weird.
Finally we have the Hearse which has a zombie in it! Just... I love everything about that, but especially the zombie doing a jig in the film’s climax. I really want to see what the rest of this guy’s trip was like. How’d he come back? why’s he in a hearse? Are they taking him to his own funeral or are they just going to California themselves? This movie brings up a lot of questions like that I never get answered like what was the straw that broke the camel’s back with Pete and Peg’s divorce? How did Max and PJ meet Bobby? What even is Bobby? Why are all of Powerline’s backup dancers sexy identical? Why is Bigfoot in this? We’ll never know. Maybe we were never meant to.
So after this rousing number Goofy nearly drives into a truck
Max suggest, rightly that he take the map.. for those of you asking why he dosen’t just use GPS, you aren’t nicely aged like I am and because it didn’t exist yet. For those of you asking the much more prudent question of “how the fuck did A Goofy Movie happen in Ducktales 2017 as the show strongly implies it did in an age where every phone has GPS?” Simple, Goofy likely trusted his family map more. I could see Goofy barely knowing how to work his phones. He dosen’t have a Frank Mitchell level hatred of machines mine, it’s just a sentiment thing.
Goofy also wants to suprise Max which brings us to our next setpiece.
Loo Loo Land Watcher World Possum Park
So Goofy takes Max to a dilipated theme park on the outskirts of Hatchetfield
the Greed ring of hell a place. It much like the map thing speaks to the fact that Goofy.. simply can’t see his teen as anything but his little boy. Part of it is simple parent child stuff, I too sometimes grapple with the fact my nibling is rapildy growing up. Not EXACTLY the same thing but similar vibe. The other may be that Goofy is simply child like in nature and thus likely never went through a rebellious or moody phase with his dad. He can’t understand a problem he never had as a teen.
So they end up going to it, and going to a goofy stage show starring The Sniggles Robo-Fizz Some Decaying Possum animatronics. This a hold over as apparently the movie was supposed to have a gag where they promoted a water park for miles but Goofy ended up taking max to a chucky cheese ripoff instead. Honestly though.. this is better. It plays better into Goofy’s central issue that he dosen’t get his kid isn’t into this. That and while I do joke abou it it gave us two damn good episodes clearly in part based on this film and this section in paticular: Loo-Loo Land from Helluva Boss and Watcher World from Nightmare time. You can watch them through the links and I highly recommend it.
And despite coming from two entirely seperate creators.. they both have similar themes and settings to each other as well, both being abou ta goofy and clueless dad with clear personal issues they aren’t adressing dealing with a mopey teeange daughter who dosen’t want to be there and has some justified anger with them. Granted they diverge as one is about an owl god in a loveless marriage whose blatant and public affair with a guy he also hired for security for their day out so he could hit on him having to come to grips with the fact his daughter thinks he’s going tup and leaver her, and the other deals with a dad who can’t accept that his gay daughter is going into a creative field and has to fight a stygian eye god. And why no the latter one came out months before mitchells vs the machine and no sadly mitchells vs the machines doe snot feature an eye god named blinky.. but there’s always the sequel. Fingers crossed. It also speaks to how good this work is that it PROBABLY inspired two other fine works.
So Max has to suffer through the stage show with the animatronics all blowing up and .. whatever this thing is.
The Possum Song isn’t bad at all it’s catchy and decent enough. It IS the weakest song of the musical, but it’s not bad on it’s own. It just isnt’ hleped by said works inspired by this one having much better songs with Loo Loo Land and The Blinky Song (Blink Once, Blink Twice). Then again when one song has Alex Brightman and the other one has Kurt Mega, Jeff Freaking Blim and James Tolbert, it’s understandable why this one would be outshone a bit. And to it’s credit this stage show dosen’t end with the anamatronics irritating a demonic former clown into a shootout with sheer jackassery or someone probably dying and no one acting like it happened so point ot you Possum Park.
Max ends up leaving early and runs inito the mascot. Max isn’t in the mood for forced cheer and hilaroiusly tells him to beat it doofus and slaps his helmet around while a group of children drag him off to presumjibly devour him. Good job max.. though i’ve seen better, your an easy third place in my ranking of cartoon characters giving mascots shit. In order second...
And of course the number one...
Still third’s an honor in this dojo. Anyway Goofy , as he’s wont to do, makes this worse by coming up to Max, plopping a possum hat on him (though Disney if you haven’t make those a real thing. I wants one), and embarasses him in public.
Max storms off and when he gets in the car can’t hitchike. He then tells Goofy off when Goofy asks why he’s doing this, telling him in so many words...
Look I do LIKE Max as a character and Jason acts the fuck out of this scene, but it still dosen’t change the fact he makes goofy feel terrible instead of actually talking to him. Then again it also dosen’t change the fact Goofy dragged him without talking to him, but Goofy at least MEANT well. Pllus unlike those other two dads Goofy didn’t blatntly hit on his boyfriend all day or say “your really hard to love sometimes” so again, points to him. This day also just ended in tears in the rain versus flame or a flood of god blood ushering them back to the car, sometimes you just gotta take the win.
What A Sernendipity Doo Da
That.. evening I guess? later afternoon? the alps? I dunno, sometime after this Goofy tries to set up a tent when an RV parks over him. And the disney character you’d expect most pops out of it
Nah it’s Pete, who warmly greets both Goofs about the trip and is oddly chummy with both of em. Yeah that’s another thing that’s changed, and sticks for the sequel: Pete no longer hates Goofy. Disrespects and bullies him? Sure but he does that with everyone. He set up hidden camera’s in his wife’s real estate listing and tried to scare it’s new tenants out with a quake machine.
Respecting people and loving them for who they are is just not who he is.
Being a gloating consumerist asshole who emotionally abuses his son is.
I do like the change though: Pete’s still a major antagonist... but now instead of trying to scheme to destroy goof it’s his toxic attitude that’s the danger. He’s FAR more of a threat as a terrible parent trying to get Goofy to adopt his equally terrible philosophy. Trying to dive Goofy out will naturally be worked out by the end of the episode. Goofy taking his bad advice has a true threat of destroying his and Max’s relationship.
But before we can get to Pete’s first attempt to truly “help” his friend, we get a real friendship in Max and PJ. I’ve always loved these two: while Max does have a tendency to enlist PJ in shenanigans, he WILL make it right when he’s taken it too far and is honestly supportive with his big buddy and genuinely loves him lik ea brother, and PJ in turn is so loyal to max and willing to be talked into zany shenanigans because Max was his first friend and will always be his truest.
PJ is Max’s concisence when he goes too far and Max is PJ’s backbone when he needs it. The two just ballance each other out.
PJ talks about the powerline thing and Max admits to him the truth, which itself shows just how much PJ means to him: Max is TERRIFIED of being honest iwth his dad, with Roxanne, with himself.. but PJ? PJ is the one person he trusts to just tell him the truth with no real hestiation, only embarassment and in turn PJ dosen’t judge and simply encourages his friend that he’ll find a way.
Atop Pete’s RV, Pete’s advice after hearing Goofy’s earnest struggles, with Goofy wondering what he’s doing wrong, is as abusive as you’d expect from someone whose son seems to live in constant fear of him: Keep Him Under Your Thumb. Make your kid fear, obey and respect you. He demonstrates this by summoning PJ to knock over his last pen. Jim Cummings is just great here by the way: While his best scene is yet to come, he still does great here NORMALIZING how he treats his kid depsite it being deeply uneerving and making it SEEM normal and healthy, with Goofy being assertive with max about still fishing rather than supping with the Petes, SEEMING to be good.. even though the audience knows with Max’s atittude issues he’ll just push back.
PJ is only so obident.. because Pete’s spent his whole life making the poor boy afraid of him. Goofy can TRY to be this.. but he’s just too good a person to. Goofy dosen’t WANT a son who obeys... he just wants one who loves him.
So they go fishin with Goofy teaching Max his perfect cast. This will be important. It’s then Goofy accidently hooks one of pete’s steaks and it accidently lures a Bigfoot over.
So Now This Film has a Bigfoot
While yes this film has breaks from reality such as Powerline not booting our heroes off stage, our heroes flying at one point, and of course the dancing zombie, it’s mostly for cartoony reasons> This KINDA does but it’s just sort of a weird thing to just.. throw into your movie you know. The Sasquatch is great, don’t get me wrong, great design, gets some really funny gags, one I TRULY adore that we’ll get to. But I still can’t get over how just SUDDENLY there’s a sasquatch in this movie. Especailly since apparently it was a bear originally.. though I do at least get the substitution as again they get some great material out of Sasquatch. Doesn’t stop it from being WEIRD .
So Bigfoot sends our heroes running and Pete running... without our heroes.
Leaving our heroes to hide in the car while Bigfoot ransacks their suplies. Though we do get that bit I mentioned when he finds Max’s Tapedeck and plays “Stayin Alive”. What can I say the Bigfoot has good taste.
But yeah this leaves our heroes trapped for hours with no clear way out. So they FINALLY start talking. Or try to given their trapped in here with no way out and no way to escape but justt can’t. Once again they just can’t communicate. This is hammered home when Goofy notices a can of soup on the hood, and brings up how they both used to call it “Hi Dad Soup” as max would write messages in it getting more and more complicated and the both fondly reminisce. Till Goofy ponits out one stinging setence he misses that says a lot “I Love You Dad”.
Max has really meant nothing by it.. but it’s clear he hasn’t said it in some time... and Goofy, while trying not to show it, clealry hasn’t taken it or his son’s withdrawl well> But noticably it’s the first time Max’s shell around his dad really earnestly cracks: he realizes just how much his striking for indpdence has hurt the guy and realizes that while Possum Park did blow... he CLEARLY didn’t deserve that drubbing Max gave him and only did so to connect with him.
It was a dumb move but he missed his son. Max’s wall he’s put up between him and his dad slowly starts to crumble more as Goofy risks his life to get the soup, continuing to grab for it even after Big Foot notices and gets it. Max starts to both repair his relationship with his dad and open up with one simple gesture.. once again spelling out hi dad in his soup.
Off The Map
Sadly though while max IS feeling better about his dad.. he still isn’t confident in HIMSELF. The talks with dad have gotten Max to open up and he does try writing an honest letter to Roxanne confessing... but then temptation arrives. Max has a pencil.. .just as the map ends up in his lap. He can EASILY change directions and get what he wants.. but it’s a clear sign of his character development that Max is questioning this. He’s started to see his dad as what he is: a flawed but well meaning person instead of a walking embarrassment. Goofy humilated him sure.. but Max is starting to see how his own shitty actions, the assembly, the mopey attutide the constant insults, have really HURT his dad.
If his dad figured this out it would destroy him.
Ultimately though Max’s own fear and self loathing beat out his growing heart.. and he changes the map shoving it back in there. But it’s still telling that he dosen’t remotely snap back to his old self at the diner. Instead.. he’s just full of guilt, barely eating his breakfast and not sure what to do, scared he’ll get caught and more scared of hurting his dad again after doing it way too damn much already.
But Goofy ends up offering an easy out by accident: in a really heartwarming gesture he gets the diner’s attention and names Max navigator, the patrons, all middle aged people who likely love a goofy heartwarming gesture including Elvis. Huh so that’s where he went. Goofy himself is growing, likely realizng from Max’s gesture that if his boy can try to change and help him.. he can trust him. He’s not even looking at the map and their path to Lake Destiny is whatever Max wants something he GENUINELY appricates, thus shoving the plan to the back of his mind for now. He can cross that bridge later.
So we get a really neat montage that gives Maxy more development: His first few stops are all extreme stuff: Trying out a Waverunner (TM), a thrill ride on a rollercoaster which causes goofy to....
and finally a monster truck rally... no telling if it’s also going to end in Hulk Hogan pushing a man off a roof. But tellingly Max notices this is a LOT for Goofy, whose been way more patient than he ever was and takes him to the biggest ball of twine in Minnesota yarn. After that it’s activities both enjoy as they go to new orleans and meet a mime who goofy accidently kills, visit Carls Butt Caverns (A great pun on Carls Bad Caverns), and in general it’s just great all backed by a runner of the two trying to change a tire showing their repariting relationship> it’s really heartwarming stuff and the two go from not being sure how to fix things.. to being like buddys, like pals, and alway seeming to work things out again.
He’s Just a Bad Kid Goof, That’s All
So with our heroes now happy, they stop for the night at the Neptune Inn, which is naturally nautcually themed and even has waterbeds. The Boys are just plain happy.. I wonder who could possibily ruin that...
Of fucking course i’ts pete, who fakes a police raid on the room having somehow found out they were there. Probably just called around hotels close to lake destiny to make sure they were still alive and weren’t going to sue him. Tellingly he’s baffled, and a little angry, at the twos relationship, and put off by Goofy pointing out he didn’t NEED to put Max under his thumb.. by just being honest and trusting his son, he got Max to open up. Pete can’t fathom this and decides to go hot tubbing with Gooofy while PJ and Max hang, likely so he can try and break the poor Goof’s spirit. He gets the perfect ammo for this thanks to Max himself: Max and PJ talk about the map thing, though it’s clear while PJ is highly impressed at Max pulling this off, Max is nervous, having only done it in the heat of the moment and clearly regretting it, not sure which way to go. Pete however has no room for nuance: He simply sees he has evidence of Max not being a good kid and something he can destroy their relationship with to make himself feel better. Gee I wonder why he’s not married anymore nor remarried by the time of the sequel several years later?
And thus we’ve come to one of the most iconic scenes in the movie and what Kevin Lima and Jason Marsden both see as their faviorite scene: The Hot Tub Scene. This is the other scene that really scared me as a kid.. but that’s part of the scene’s charm. While the Mazur scene now frustrates me for other reason.. I love this one. It’s rife with tension and unease. Farmer and Cummings just ooze chemstiry and play off one another to perfection.
It starts out great enough by building tension the simpliest way: our duo are relaxing.. but we KNOW what Pete knows and we know he’s going to use it so the first seconds of it are just filled with tension as we don’t know HOW he’s going to use it. And Pete’s actions here are a masterclass in emotional manipulation too: he eases into it asking Goofy about max and trying to get an opening, before finally breaking it to him, not in his usual blunt way, but by playing that “he just has to tell him because it’s the right thing to do” and that “he’s really sorry”. And some people have bought that.. but I do not. Not at all. While I think Pete dosen’t HATE Goofy anymore and on some warped level thinks he’s doing him a favor... Pete’s also blunt, crass. If it didn’t serve him to ease into it, he’d of just told Goofy the second they sat down. But he KNOWS that would just rattle him too much. Pete KNOWS that Goofy will likely defend Max and not want to belivie it so he eases it in so it kinda plants in Goofy’s brain that something’s off about Max suddenly liking him. To Pete, it probably IS sudden and he can’t fathom a son genuinely loving his dad, but regardless he knows he needs to get Goofy in a place where he WILL double check it and Pete will “win”.
What Pete didn’t expect though was HOW Goofy fought back: he not only gets genuinely anger, with Farmer expertly showing it: he dosen’t fume or anything, but it’s clear from his voice (The animatoin is great at that too) Pete has gone too far and friend or no, Goofy won’t tolerate him daring to lie about his son. He’s firm but clearly steamed, saying he trusts his son, won’t check the map.. but it’s how he claps back that shows the depths of who Goofy is.. and that he’s not NEARLY as stupid as everyone, including his own son, thinks. His lines are telling and farmer’s delivery is incredible:
Goofy: Maybe max isn’t all the things you think a son should be, but he loves me
Pete: Hey, my son respects me
Goofy: (Shrugging, tired and sarcastic) Yeah.
Now this is seemingly inconsistent, as Goofy is seemingly blind to Pete’s fauls so how would he know. And it’s simple really: he was in denial. Pete was his friend, giving him advice, hanging out iwth him, being there for him. I think the poor Goof knew deep down Pete was abusive, that PJ perfered Goofy for good reason and that deep down Pete’s kikd FEARED him. Not respected him, not loved him FEARED HIM. It’s just hard to admit someone you look up to is terrible, trust me I know. But faced with Pete seemingly lying about max and CLEARLY doing so out of spite, Goofy can’t deny it anymore. And I think part of him HOPED the words would sink in, that by telling pete this he’d have a revelation and that maybe his faith wasn’t misplaced.
Pete’s response is telling and greatly delivered by both the animation and cummings: Pete definatly says “he RESPECTS me” ... but both his face and tone scream that he’s trying to convicne himself, not Goofy. And goofy’s sad resigned yeah afterwords reads as Goofy having lost all faith in his friend.
But despite knowing Pete’s wrong and now realizing how bad a person he TRULY is, about time, he can’t help himself: he just has to know. Sometimes we as humans can’t help ourself.. and he checks it.. finding out the truth and falling apart in the car in a truly depressing bit of animation. It’s GOOD animation mind it just tears your heart apart as you watch Goofy defeated, thinking his kid is bad when he’s just lost. But neither parent one: Pete is faced with the hard truth his son hates him and no amount of denial is going to paper over that and goofy is faced with the fact max lied to him.
I Just Wanted To Be A Part Of It:
While Goofy IS at a low point, and simply collapses sadly into bed the next night he does give Max a final chance: with the fork in the road coming up, he gives Max the choice of routes.
Max not realizing what’s going on.. chooses the one towards LA and Goofy as a result turns, cold , angry, and bitter, with Max unerved by this and trying to get his dad to snap out of it> The rolls have been reversed: MAX is the one trying to get his dad to open up and Goofy is the one being stubborn. Goofy instead drives them to the grand canyon and stares out morosely.
And I do mean the stubborn ass part: while Max fucked up and made a mistake ONCE AGAIN instead of tlaking to him Goofy takes someone elses word at face value.. but this time it’s 80 times more heartbreaking. This time Max COULD’VE prevented it but his own fear of Goofy learnign the truth lead to this. HIs own fear of owning up to his mistakes and his tendency to just keep lying instead have left him with a Dad whose just.. done with him. And when faced with that Max just sulks against the car.. but unlike his prevoius sulks which were those of an entitled teen mad about something he could’ve told his dad about instead of hiding it’s now of one who realizes just how badly he hurt him and can’t figure out HOW to fix it.
So naturally Max’s leaning accidently sends the car running and the Goofs running afte ritk both bllaming each other and yelling as they catch up with the car and get into itk GOofy still rightfully furious about the map and Max rightfully furious about the fact Goofy’s now blaming him for everything. Even if he deserves it for the way he’s acted and what he’s done.. it dosen’t make it RIGHT Goofy’s doing this: Max is a teenager: while him being morose and stanofofish is okay i’ts not okay fo rhis dad to do it back to him. The car ends up going up river and things finally come to a head... Max calls Goofy out for dragging him along, Goofy brings up the call, with max rightfully saying “it’s not what you think”, and with tensions at their breaking ponit for both... we get the most heartbreaking exchange in the entire movie:
Goofy: You even lied to me!
Max: I had to! You were ruining my life!
Goofy: I was only trying to take my boy fishing, okay?!
Max: I'm not your little boy anymore, Dad! I've grown up! I've got my own life now!
Goofy: I know that! I just wanted to be part of it! You're my son, Max. No matter how big you get... you'll always be my son.
I cannot and have not overstated how good bill is.. but I haven’t really given Jason his full due. Here with the most emotion we see what Max is underneath, unerable, scared and just wanting to be his own man while finding out what that means, but lashing out at his well meaning dad in the process.
Bill still wins the scene though: Goofy’s frustrated “I just wanted to take my boy fishing” is heartbreaking as he really just wanted to fix it by reliving his own past instead of seeing Max WASN’T him and would need soemthing diffrent. But the last part is the most heartbreakingly telling: Goofy revealing that beyond “prison” or “being a good dad” .. he just wants a relationship with his son again. He knows Max is changing and won’t need him... but Goofy STILL needs max in his life and to be there for his boy and just wants max to LET him. This whole argument sums up the two’s biggest issues in a nutshell.. while FINALLY setting them once and for all on the path to truly fixing them. The Soup was a good start... but it only helped so much with Max sliding back into old patterns and lying and Goofy assuming some good times meant it was over.
But it’s by COMMUINCATING, by honestly telling Max how he feels instead of trying to force max to feel it, that Max’s walls finally and truly go down and the healing finally begins. It’s again why I don’t hate the tangle of miscommmuincatoins: because the issue wasn’t those.. it’s that the two COULDN’T commuincate, as people often have trouble doing, and that only by trying to, with Goofy making the first true step.. they finally do.
Max clearly feels terrible and the two stay siilent for a bit.. before the two make up in the most heartwarming way possible: with the song
Nobody Else But You:
This song is just.. beautiful, with Lohr and Farmer really connecting and the animaton really flowing as Max and Goofy finally open up, with Max finally shownig open love for his dad and admitting despite his faults.. he loves him, and Goofy gives him the same back. it’s just a truly touching, slow, gentle number as the two reconclile, a film’s worth of heartbreak, rage and miscommincation fading as the two finally do what Goofy wanted to do the wohle time: bond as father and son. It’s a really magical song and you can find it HERE, as I can only use so many videos in a post and had to save them for the bigger numbres.. and that pervert joke> I stand by that I couldn’t do the review without it.
So with our heroes finally reconciled we fade back to them as Max is finished explaning the situation. This is a great way to get through clearing things up fast but beliviebly: presumibly they’ve spent some time going over things and with proper context, Goofy now gets it was an inapproriate but ultimately harmless stunt Mazur inflated because he sucks, that Max was trying to impress a girl, and that he GENINELY regretted the map thing. By commuincating at last.. the fog is lifted: there’s no guilt from max and no fears of max going to jail from goofy. Probably a stern talking to or two about you know, not hyjacking assemblies but their on the same page... well kinda. Max has grown enough he’s willing to face the music and not go to Powerline and just go fishing.. but Goofy encourages him to anyway and fully backs him on it. He knows Max will tell Roxanne the truth.. but it also dosen’t matter if she won’t talk to him nor does the boy deserve to be a laughingstock simply because he made up a lie in the heat of a moment that spread without him intending it to and that he was fully willing to give up on consequences and all to do the right thing by his dad. As for a plan he’ll think it up.. after they go over the waterfall.
Yeah said waterfall nearly kills them, with Goofy falling to his near death and Max BARELY saving him, awesomely using the perfect cast with Goofy prouder than he’s ever been. So while Max is about to get what he wanted.. Goofy already got it too, seeing his son cary on the tradition.. and what’s even more touching is Max learned it WHILE clearly unhappy with Goofy and not wanting to. He still paid enough attention to do it when it matttered. Now it’s time for Goofy to do what matters
I2I:
I saved this climax for my last video for more reasons than just “the song fucking slaps.” It does but this is easily one of the best climaxes i’ve seen in animaion, and this was WITH the fact they were working with two stuidos elsewhere and had to make live action segments showing what else happened. The fact this is as good as it is is a damn miracle and I’m acknolwedging it.
Goofy actually gets them in, using two instrument cases. So as the two head off we’re treated to Powerline.. and after a film’s worth of build up he does not disappoint, owning the stage with his presence and cute backup dancers and handsome self, but more than looks he has style with a damn cool look, stage prresence and THE best song in the film.
As Lima said, this film just has a very climactic feel: it just demands your attention with every second and rightfully so. It’s lyrics also perfectly fit the theme of the film: that despite our diffrences we CAN make things better with a little love and a little walk in someone elses shoes. It’s a simple message sure but damn if it isn’t one a LOT of people need to hear. It perfectly sums up our two heroes relationship as father and son.
The antics of our heroes is also awesome and blends perfectly as goofy accidently peeps on a woman, gets punched into a light bulb and FUCKING EMERGES ON STAGE, while Max flees a guard.
But as a show of how far he’s come rather than be embaraced by his dad as he stands there deer in headlights, Max shouts at his dad to do the perfect cast as a move and after beating the guard with the spotlight:
Lands himself and joins in. And Powerline is one cool motherfucker as he just.. lets them. His response to some weirdo bursting out of a prop and his son joinging them on stage is “That takes balls man.. I gotta respect that... let’s dance!” And he copies them perfectly! It’s just so damn cool and just the right amount of cheesey.
Meanwhile we cut to Stacey’s party. Earlier Roxanne had seen max was absent while Bobby claimed “I don’t know the motherfucker”.. but with Max showing up she smiles big, relivived and happy he’s who she thought he was, while Bobby loudly calls max his friend
That said he does get a cute moment with Stacey. I mean I may not ship them because Stacey is really nice and Bobby is Pauly Shore, bu tthe two of them reaching for the cheese is really fucking cute. Can’t lie.
We also get a breif but OH SO SATSIFYING Scene with the Petes. PJ is utterly stoked his best buddy actually pulled it off and while that’s sweet the real show is Pete. Not only does he spit BEER onto the screen, something I sadly don’t think Disney would let fly today, but it’s how I read this moment that makes it all the better: it’s not max being up there that suprises him.. i’ts GOOFY. He probably figured Max would try doing a runner and getting up there.. but Goofy being there, and happily dancing with hi son, shows that no, Goofy HELPED HIM.
Goofy found out Max lied, was at his lowest eb.. and instead of becoming a copy of Pete himself and cracking down on the boy they eventually reconciled.
Despite stubbornly clinging to his philosphy of control.. it endeded up proving worthless: Goofy and Max are closer than ever.. and Pete has to live with the fact that his need for control is the reason he and his son wil lNEVER have that kind of relationship and probably never have one at all once PJ leaves college. You can imagine my reactoin to Pete’s complete and utter suprise and devstatoin:
So with that we fade out of the awesome climax for one last scene..
Moment of Truth:
A few days later.. probably... Goofy is driving Max back with the car somehow still alive. how?
Regardless as one final show of Max’s progressoin as a person.. he’s coming clean to Roxanne and is nervous about it, with this clearly having been in part due to Goofy’s prodding.. but Goofy is supportive and encourages him.
After running into her scary dad again whose likely fightin gthe urge to make Max into a hand puppet, Roxanne comes out and Max is honest: Goofy didn’t know powerline, he was just trying to impress her etc and gives a genuine apology for it. He’s grown from an insecure young man whose so afraid of rejection he has to do a stunt and who shoves his dad away like an asshole constantly due to his feer of being rejected by the world like him.. to accepting it: taking his dad’s genuine support and being honest with said girl like he was with his dad.
And while Roxanne is udnerstandably pissed.. she does accept the apology and the fact he did all this for her was still impressive. And admits.. she always liked him. From the first time they met.. and from hearing his laugh> The thing he resented most, the thing he most takes after his dad (though Marsden does do his own unique version, a nice symbol that Max is his own man. ), is what she loves the most about him and waht really charmed her> The rest was NICE, but he never NEEDED to be someone cool or popular.. she loves him just the way he is. And is still into him. My one real issue with the film is we don’t get a LOT of Roxanne’s character, but she’s still likeable enough i’ts pasable.. I just wish we got her in more media so they could flesh her out more is all.
She asks Max out but he says he has something else to do.. for real this time. She’s again annoyed, but he’s honest: he has to do something with his dad, he can do tommorow, she accepts because this woman clearly has the patience of a goddess, and he adorably steals a kiss from her. Now granted this is a mood that should be used sparingly as hell, but here given she’s still into him, kissed his cheek before and given Max is very clearly the kind of guy who’d apologize if he made her uncomfortable with it, even way back in the 90′s, it works and she’s flattered. Goofy interupts the moment by naturally crashing in while the car explodes.. but in one final sweet moment, Max instead introduces Roxanne, she takes it in stride, and Goofy kisses her hand lik ea gentleman. And we’re FINALLY out. Seroiusly this took three days.
Final Thoughts:
As you can probably wager I love this movie and regret having taken so long to get back to it. It has an awesome narrative arc, wonderful animation and some of the best voice actors in the buisness at the top of their game, all topped with tons of great music. Check this one out if you haven’t, you WILL not regret it and it’s the perfect movie to kick off my summer. I even watche dthe second half the same day as my niece and niblings last day of school. So yeah start your summer right with this, it’s an utter masterpiece and is now easily one of my faviorite disney movies.. maybe. I really shoudl do a list of those. Pixar included obviously. But I can get to letterboxd in a moment for that. Point is, Kevin Lima is a genuis and I really want to rewatch Tarzan now. If my final thoughts seem short in comparisoin i’ts only because I again just spent three days going into deep detail about how awesome this movie was.
After this Jason kept the roll of Max, who we really need back, and Bill kept on trucking..but both would reunite for both House of Mouse, which had a Roxanne episode I already covered.. and a DTV sequel.. and guess what’s ALSO part of my rewards? So yeah come back in september for the sequel... I delayed it that long as I wanted it for back to school season. So come back then, stay goofy.. and try to see eye to eye while i’ll see you at the next rainbow.
