I have been a garage / home gym / outdoor exercise dude for decades. I use logs, rocks, tires, concrete, ropes, chains , whatever.
My exercise life started in 1953 when I was between 5th & 6th grades. Started at age 10. I did not care about team sports and did not understand them. I started tree climbing for sport and got good at it. Junior high I got so I could walk on my hands. Got in a YMCA about 1957
Climbing trees for fun turned into a full time job for 50 years
and saw two kettlebells and an Olympic 310 pound York barbell set. Got strong in high school.
Fast forward my work was always physical. Jackhammer, tree work, landscaping. Work was always exercise and sometimes cardio. Got into running in 1977 when I heard about a five mile race coming up. Thirty-nine years later I am running trail races mostly and a few road events.
To this day I never watched a football , baseball, or basketball game on TV or in person. I never missed a thing as I could do my things any place.I put a 1″ manila rope in a chestnut tree a while ago in my outdoor gym. I foot locked up it this morning. A few more goodies and I will have a multi-workout fitness path just behind the house.

When the summer hits and kids are out of school I will be at sixty-three years of non-stop exercise. Getting big is not the goal, staying fit and strong is. I have yet to get in real shape. Perhaps by year’s end I will be there.
I found out Ken’s story when he reached out via email. Want to have your story featured on the site? Put your details in the contact form below!

As powerlifting and lifting weights in general becomes more and more popular, a new wave of lifters is taking to their basements and garages to train. Among the many major benefits to training at home, you’ll never have to wait to use equipment, you can train whenever you want, and you can have that time of solace. Lifting alone can be very rewarding and can border on a spiritual experience…
