The Defense Threat Reduction Agency granted $253,279 to EcoHealth Alliance in July to conduct research to thwart the use of viruses as weapons of mass destruction. EcoHealth Alliance worked closely with the Wuhan Institute of Virology, the lab that many U.S. officials believe was ground zero for the coronavirus outbreak. The group's founder, Peter Daszak, secretly organized a group of scientists early in the pandemic to publicly undermine the theory that the pandemic sprung from a leak at the Wuhan lab.

The U.S. intelligence community is divided on whether the virus came from the lab or naturally spilled over from animals to humans. One intelligence agency assessed with moderate confidence that an accident at the Wuhan lab resulted in the first coronavirus infection, according to a report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. Four other intelligence agencies assessed with only low confidence that the first infection came through natural exposure. Though the lab-leak theory was widely dismissed in 2020, a growing number of scientists now say it is the most likely explanation for the outbreak.

Report: WHO Granted China Authority To Veto Scientists On Wuhan Mission

According to the Journal, the constraints placed on the WHO team rendered the scientists unable to conduct a thorough investigation into the virus’ origins.

A team of more than a dozen scientists, including one American, visited Wuhan last month, where they met with Chinese authorities and scientists to figure out how the coronavirus first infected humans.

A report of the investigation is expected to be released next week, after Chinese authorities have had a chance to review it and make edits, according to the Journal.

Some members of the WHO team, including Peter Daszak, the lone American on the mission, have dismissed one prominent theory that the virus originated from an accident at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, which studies coronaviruses.

Most of the scientists have said that they believe that the virus jumped from an animal species in Western China to humans, possibly at one of Wuhan’s outdoor food markets.

Daszak has come under criticism from some within the scientific community who say he has a conflict of interest because his organization, EcoHealth Alliance, has worked closely with the Wuhan Institute. Daszak also organized a group of scientists in February 2020 to release a letter that called the lab leak hypothesis a “conspiracy theory.”

WHO COVID-19 Investigator Tried To Hide Involvement In Pro-China Statement, Email Reveals

Dr. Peter Daszak, a British-American zoologist on the WHO team investigating the origins of COVID-19 in China, helped rally scientists to sign a statement in Feb. 2020 that condemned “conspiracy theories” that the virus had originated in a Chinese lab. Daszak, who helped funnel U.S. government money to the Wuhan Institute of Virology for years leading up to the pandemic, deliberately tried to conceal the extent of his involvement with the statement, according to a newly revealed email from investigative group U.S. Right To Know.

In the email, Daszak tells University of North Carolina (UNC) researcher Dr. Ralph Baric that they should not sign the statement condemning the lab-leak theory so that it seems more independent and credible. “You, me and him should not sign this statement, so it has some distance from us and therefore doesn’t work in a counterproductive way,” Daszak wrote.

“We’ll then put it out in a way that doesn’t link it back to our collaboration so we maximize an independent voice,” he added. Baric, a leading epidemiologist at UNC, agreed. “Otherwise it looks self-serving and we lose impact,” he wrote back.

The statement, signed by 27 “leading scientists,” says the signees “stand together to strongly condemn conspiracy theories suggesting that COVID-19 does not have a natural origin.” It also specifically lauds the efforts of Chinese scientists, stating, “we sign this statement in solidarity with all scientists and health professionals in China who continue to save lives and protect global health.”

Daszak, who ultimately did sign the letter but did not fully reveal the extent to which he helped organize its publication, later admitted he did so to help protect Chinese scientists from criticism.
