Waitress in London
Waitress in London at the Adelphi theatre- March 12, 2019
So in March, I got to attend my first West End show! I have seen Waitress twice before, once on Broadway and once on tour, and I enjoy it more each time. So hopefully this review will be shorter (probably not) and you can read both of those previous reviews under the tags: theater review and waitress.
I just adore this opening. I’m sure I've bragged about it before, but the drum beat live and honestly the lyrics. (Prepare for me to praise Sara Bareilles for eternity). It’s the perfect introduction to Jenna and being faced with all those pies aka decisions, it’s symbolic.
Opening Up also introduces Cal, Dawn, and Becky perfectly. When Dawn says, “I like the way most of the days look exactly the same,” she places the ketchup bottles in line with each other. Also when they say “seeing the same thing,” they sort of twitch their necks as if they are robots reacting to the same old diner events.
What Baking Can Do is one of the best songs of all time? Yeah, I think so. And Jenna’s parents come out and fight behind her. And she’s using real food.
David Hunter was the perfect Dr. Pomatter! He was awkward and funny and everything Dr. Pomatter should be.
When He Sees Me, brilliant song. Dawn is my quirky, awkward queen.
It Only Takes a Taste, the back drop, Jenna and Dr. Pomatter’s encounter, I like it. It’s a cute scene.
We all want a friendship with a Becky and Dawn.
Jack McBrayer AS OGIE. When I tell you, I was laughing so hard I was crying, I am not exaggerating. Can he sing? No. Does it matter? No. His comedic skills carry his performance and the audience was in stitches. He was a pure delight to watch!
Like, I mentioned I love Waitress more each time I see it, therefore, I never saw Bad Idea as a fantastic act one finale, but it really is elevated more each time I see it. Katharine and David just bang the table as they stare at each other from across the way. The song has an intensity and strong desire within it as these two lost people grapple with their feelings for each other that they are know wrong, but, oh, feels so right. And there are some hidden gem lyrics in it that really reveal both of their characters. So it’s really a great act one finale!
Marisha Wallace is a fantastic Becky and belts I Didn’t Plan It.
You Matter to Me will be my wedding song. I really adore their relationship and this song. Jenna is the only one who calms Dr. Pomatter down who is frazzled and stressed out. It’s beautiful.
Shaun Prendergast was great as Old Joe. He really is such a sweet character and always believes in Jenna and gives it to Earl!
Earl and Jenna’s fight always makes the audience silent and Earl’s breakdown is really interesting as you see how much Earl relies on Jenna, but does not treat her with the respect she deserves.
She Used to Be Mine was extraordinary. Katharine is holding these notes so long and her voice is literally echoing off the Adelphi’s walls. The actress plays a big part, but I think this song is so powerful that the worst singer could sing it and you’d still get chills. Maybe not, but it’s that powerful.
The Contraction Ballet is beautifully done. Right after She Used to Be Mine, Jenna goes into labor and as she clutches her stomach and climbs onto the hospital bed, she sees her mom and Earl and to me it’s such a powerful scene.
When Jenna holds her baby for the first time, Lulu’s Pie Song plays, which she sings a little to Dr. Pomatter before You Matter to Me. The full version of Lulu’s Pie Song is on Bareilles’ Waitress concept album. I never caught this detail before.
I love how in the end when Jenna owns her own pie shop and the waitress uniforms change to bright colors, and Becky and Dawn still work with her. It just shows how Jenna’s life has changed from the boring, traditional waitress uniforms to a fun, bright uniform.
It’s a great show and you can see my stage door pics under #stage door. Katharine McPhee is there until some time in June, and I definitely recommend checking her out. But, no matter who pays Jenna, this show is amazing and you’re gonna cry and laugh and feel many emotions. :)
